Weekly Commentary: Outcome of Likud Primaries Victory for Democratic Values Dr. Aaron Lerner Date: 11 December 2008 Is it really a disaster the Binyamin Netanyahu will have to honor his campaign promises? I can imagine him visiting the White House after forming a government: Mr. President, we did everything the Supreme Court would let us get away with to try and stack the Likud list with people who would give me carte blanch, but we are a democracy and, as the saying goes, the People have spoken. Now let me make this clear President Obama: my campaign stand about not leaving the Golan or dividing Jerusalem or ceding the Jordan Valley wasn't an election ploy. It is genuine. And I appreciate this opportunity to make our case on these issues. But let me premise this by stating that the reality of the situation is that even if I wanted to flush my campaign promises about not leaving the Golan or dividing Jerusalem or ceding the Jordan Valley down the toilet - and I don't want to - I couldn't get away with it. Arik Sharon already raped the Likud once and I am telling you, Mr. President, the moment I try to pull off the same thing these MK's will bring me down and force new elections come-what-may. They won't hesitate a moment. Because they know damn well that time is against them if they wait. I would end up, as my critics joke, selling furniture, and you would find yourself talking to some other Likud prime minister telling you the same story all over again. Now that's not to say that we can't do something to accommodate the rich American Jews who supported your campaign. My "economic peace" program is choc-a-bloc with photo op possibilities. Tell you what. When you have the time we could have a ribbon cutting ceremony for a Palestinian seam-line industrial zone area that you could fly in for with a plane load of your supporters so that they can add the photo ID passes and other paraphernalia to their Oslo era trophy wall. The "peace consultants" can make some money preparing feasibilities studies for various project and special economic concession can be arranged for the businessmen who want to recover part of their "investment" by participating in "peace business". Look, President Obama, I know that your supporters would prefer to fly in for an extravaganza celebrating Israeli withdrawal from the Golan. But they didn't vote in Israel. And the Israeli voters sent me to Jerusalem with clear marching orders and a Knesset that won't let me pull another Sharon. Now, while we are talking about the Golan. I would like to point out that. . . .
