WHO: No licensed swine flu vaccine til end of year

LONDON (AP) — A fully licensed swine flu vaccine might not be available until the end of the year, a top official at the World Health Organization said Monday, in a report that could affect many countries' vaccination plans.
But countries could use emergency provisions to get the vaccines out quicker if they decide their populations need them, Marie-Paule Kieny, director of WHO's Initiative for Vaccine Research, said during a news conference.
The swine flu viruses currently being used to develop a vaccine aren't producing enough of the ingredient needed for the vaccine, and WHO has asked its laboratory network to produce a new set of viruses as soon as possible.
So far, the swine flu viruses being used are only producing about half as much "yield" to make vaccines as regular flu viruses.
Last week, WHO reported nearly 95,000 cases of swine flu worldwide including 429 deaths. Most people who get the virus only experience mild symptoms and don't need treatment to get better.
In a presentation to WHO's vaccines advisory group last week, Kieny said a lower-producing vaccine would significantly delay the timeline for vaccines. That could complicate many Western countries' plans to roll out vaccines in the fall.
British Health Minister Andy Burnham promised that vaccines would start arriving in the U.K. in August — and predicted the country could see up to 100,000 cases a day by the end of that month.
Before countries can start any mass swine flu vaccination campaigns, the vaccines need to be vetted by regulatory authorities for safety issues. That means testing the vaccines in a small number of humans first, which can take weeks or months.
"I think it will be a very significant challenge to have vaccines going into peoples' arms in any meaningful number by September," said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Diseases Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota. "At this point, it is still is an issue of when will it be available, who will get it, and what will be the dose?"
Kieny said many of those questions remain unanswered at the moment. But she said WHO's vaccine advisory group recommended that health care workers receive the first swine flu shots since they are on the front lines of the global outbreak.

On Monday, British health authorities said a family doctor died over the weekend after contracting swine flu.
WHO's vaccine experts recommend that countries decided that certain groups should get the vaccine first — like pregnant women, people with chronic respiratory problems or obesity, children, and possibly young to middle-aged adults, who have been disproportionately affected by the virus.
The decision to start vaccinating people against swine flu — which so far remains a mild virus in most people — will ultimately be a gamble, since there will be limited data on any vaccine. Until millions of people start receiving the shots, experts will not know about rare and potentially dangerous side effects.
The public health community may still be scarred by the U.S.' disastrous 1976 swine flu vaccination campaign, which was abruptly stopped after hundreds of people reported developing Guillain-Barre syndrome, a paralyzing disorder, after getting the flu vaccine.
Several drugmakers are currently considering using adjuvants, ingredients used to stretch a vaccine's active ingredient, which could allow for many more vaccine doses. But little or no data exists on the safety of vaccines with adjuvants in populations including children and pregnant women. And in the U.S., there are no licensed flu vaccines that use adjuvants.
(IsraelNN.com) A young Israeli girl was hospitalized Monday in serious condition with H1N1 flu at the Ichilov hospital in Tel Aviv. Her condition has been complicated by pneumonia.
The girl’s mother has also been hospitalized with the disease, but she is in good condition. All previous cases of H1N1 flu in Israel have been mild.
After 846 reported cases of swine flu were recorded in Israel, the first severe case was diagnosed Monday.

A 21-year-old tourist from Sweden was hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit of the Ichilov Medical Center in Tel Aviv with a severe case of the H1N1 virus infection.
The tourist's mother was also diagnosed with swine flu and hospitalized in the same hospital suffering a light infection.
So far 94,512 people have been diagnosed with swine flu globally, and 429 have died from the disease.

Pneumonia requiring ICU care is serious, granted; but let me ask you: does every person hospitalized in Israel in the ICU for pneumonia make the news? Of course not. You see, these vaccines that they are planning to administer to children , pregnant women and the sick have obviously NOT been properly studied. Even the ones that are undergoing trials in the US right now would need good data for a few years of clinical practice before being declared safe, and even then, as you probably know from scores of other medications that were found to be very, very dangerous, there is never a guarantee that years of clinical trials will make ANY new medication acceptable,
Now these vaccines are going to be massively administered to MILLIONS OF CHILDREN WORLDWIDE, without any scientific data showing safety whatsoever.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States will spend an another $1 billion for ingredients for an H1N1 vaccination, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said on Sunday.
"There'll be another $1 billion worth of orders placed to get the bulk ingredients for an H1N1 vaccination. Congress has agreed with the president that this is the number one priority, keeping Americans safe and secure," Sebelius said on CNN.
Sebelius has said plans were on track for a mid-October vaccination program, although it was not certain Americans would be offered the vaccine for the so-called swine flu.
"We are aggressively working on, first of all, testing the virus strains to get a vaccination ready. It needs to be safe so testing and clinical trials will start this month. We'll know a lot more by the end of the summer and it needs to be effective," she said.
Companies already are working on an H1N1 swine flu vaccine.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has scheduled a July 23 advisory panel meeting to discuss clinical trials of the vaccines against the H1N1 influenza virus.
"FDA is working with the scientists at NIH (National Institutes of Health) to make sure that we have a safe and effective strain and then we're getting ready to make sure that we have a vaccination program."
There are about 1 million cases of H1N1 right now in the United States, where 170 people have died from the strain, Sebelius said.
About 36,000 people die each year from the seasonal flu.

Too easy to manipulate the "results". Massive military trials are a better idea. That way if hundreds and thousands of military become victims, the administration can enjoy the wrath of their mothers and fathers. However, this would also have to be independently administered and verified. In our very sophisticated world of lies and deceit, any "test" would be difficult, if not impossible to verify. Money and death are strong incentives to become part of program.

SCENARIOS-Children go to front of flu vaccine line

WASHINGTON, July 10 (Reuters) - The World Health Organization plans to release guidance next week on the need for a vaccine against the new H1N1 swine flu virus.
Companies are already working to make one.
Few experts doubt there will be an H1N1 vaccination campaign but questions remain about how much companies should be prepared to make, whether to try to stretch the supply using ingredients called adjuvants and who should get the vaccine.
Here are some potential scenarios:
FULL SPEED AHEAD
WHO could advise companies to switch to full-speed production of an H1N1 swine flu vaccine for the northern hemisphere's autumn, with the goal of getting a maximum 4.9 billion doses ready. More doses would be needed if clinical trials show that people will need two shots a few weeks apart to get the best protection. Even more doses would be needed if children aged 2 to 9 turn out to need three doses. Currently, unvaccinated children under 9 need two influenza vaccinations the first year to get full protection from seasonal flu.
It is possible WHO will recommend that all age groups be immunized against the new H1N1 virus. Usually, countries issue guidelines for specific age groups, depending on who is worst hit and balanced against vaccine availability.
The elderly and the very young are usually at the front of the line for influenza vaccines because they are most likely to die or develop serious complications.
Between 250,000 and 500,000 people die every year from seasonal flu, but this new virus targets older children, young adults and people with conditions such as asthma, pregnancy and heart disease.
LIMITED PRODUCTION
WHO may advise companies to proceed with limited and cautious production of a vaccine, keeping in reserve the possibility of a stepped-up seasonal flu vaccination campaign.
The seasonal formula is a cocktail of three different strains -- the seasonal H1N1 strain, a very distant cousin of the pandemic strain, an H3N2 virus and an influenza B virus.
H1N1 is spreading in places where seasonal flu is circulating and scientists say it has the potential to mix in a flu patient's body and emerge as a new, unpredictable strain.
Controlling seasonal flu may be at least as important as controlling H1N1.
LIMITED PRODUCTION
This may be recommended if it appears the virus has started to change, making a vaccine less protective. Infectious disease experts say there is little sign of this so far.
WHO may also recommend limited production while clinical trials -- tests in people -- get underway. U.S. health officials said this week those trials will get started in August and will give more information about whether the vaccine is safe and what kind of immunity it produces.

Using an adjuvant to boost immune response to a vaccine is possible as well. Such a vaccine would not be licensed but U.S. regulatory authorities may allow it under emergency use provisions.Adjuvants can be mixed with vaccine after it is made so their availability would not affect production.

WHAT IS KNOWN
Most people have limited immunity to the new H1N1 swine flu virus. It is a mixture of two pig viruses, one of which is itself a mixture of pig, human and bird viruses.
There is some suggestion that people over the age of 50 may have some immunity to the virus, perhaps because it is similar to H1N1 strains that circulated before the 1957 pandemic that killed 2 million people globally. In that pandemic, H1N1 strains were replaced within months by a new strain called H2N2, and H1N1 did not reappear again until the 1970s.
Health officials already agree that vaccination campaigns should focus on school-age children, as they are not only among those most at risk of infection but schools serve as breeding grounds where viruses of all types spread.
In addition, people with underlying conditions, including pregnant women, are among groups that would be at the head of the line, as well as healthcare workers who must stay healthy to care for the sick and administer vaccines. (Editing by John O'Callaghan)

AMSTERDAM – Chronic hunger may be "the defining human tragedy of this century," as climate change causes growing seasons to shift, crops to fail, and storms and droughts to ravage fields, an advocacy group said.
Oxfam International released a report Monday as leaders of the Group of Eight wealthiest nations prepare to meet in Italy this week, with an agenda to include both food security and climate change.
It says that as the weather changes, millions of people in areas suffering food scarcity will have to give up traditional crops, possibly leading to social upheavals such as mass migrations and possible conflict over water resources.
Rich countries in temperate climate zones, such as northern Europe and parts of the United States, will benefit from warmer weather and more rainfall, but far more people in hotter, poorer countries will face more erratic and expensive food supplies, said the British-based nonprofit group.
The report, "What Happened to the Seasons?" was meant to add urgency to the G-8 meeting and to a broader group of 17 countries, the Major Economies Forum, which convenes later in the week to try to unblock negotiations on a new climate change agreement due to be completed in December.
Oxfam said it prepared a study for the Institute of Development Studies by surveying farmers around the world, who report that changing seasonal patterns were already affecting their ability to plan the sowing and harvesting of crops. The results, it said, were "strikingly consistent across entire geographies."

Farmers have begun changing their crops in the tropics, where a 1 degree Celsius (1.8 Fahrenheit) temperature shift can make traditional crops unsustainable. Unpredictable rainfall makes their choices of new crops a gamble, the report said.
Among the worst hit are nations that grow rice, the world's most common food. Yields are predicted to drop an average 10 percent for every 1 degree C rise in temperature in countries like the Philippines, where production could fall 50-70 percent as early as 2020. At the same time, China will grow more rice as the area of warm temperatures spreads, it said.
Corn is another staple that will be widely affected by climate change since it is particularly vulnerable to water stress, it said. Corn is the main source of food for 250 million people in east Africa and is used as animal feed around the world.
Negotiators at U.N. climate talks have been tasked with setting up an adaptation fund to help poor countries deal with the affects of climate change. U.N. estimates suggest as much as $200 billion a year may be needed by 2030 for developing water resources in increasingly arid regions, shifting agriculture to more suitable crops, building sea walls to protect coastal cities from rising sea levels and helping fishermen whose stocks would be affected by acidification of the ocean.
The Oxfam report said steps can be taken to bolster the world's food supply.
"The world's agricultural potential is less than 60 percent exploited: there is still enough land to feed everyone, even with population levels at the 9.2 billion currently predicted by the United Nations for 2050," it said. Modern agricultural methods, irrigation and fertilizers could dramatically lift yields.

Am Yisrael wants the Temple rebuilt!
A survey conducted by the Panels Insitute revealed that 64 % of the Israeli public , and half of secular Israelis, want the Temple rebuilt. 97% of respondents know that the Temple was destroyed on Tisha B'Av ( Ninth of Av).
The survey's second question queried the public’s desire to rebuild the Temple. Sixty-four percent responded favorably and 36 percent said no. Analysis of the answers revealed that not only hareidi-religious and other religious Jews want to rebuild the Temple, (100 percent and 97 percent respectively), but also the traditional public (91 percent) and many secular Jews (47 percent) do as well.
