"A piece of non-news": this is how the Franciscan David Maria Jaeger, one of the greatest experts in the relations between the Holy See and Israel, comments with SIR the news that were published a few days ago on the Israeli media, saying that president Shimon Pérès wishes to place some Holy Places under Vatican authority, including the Church of the Annunciation in Nazareth, the Cenacle on Mount Zion, the garden of Gethsemane at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, the Church of the Miracle of the Loaves in Tabgha, on the banks of Lake of Tiberias, and Mount Tabor. 10:18 - POPE TO THE HOLY LAND: GIVING BACK THE HOLY PLACES, JAEGER (EXPERT), "A PIECE OF NON-NEWS" (2) |
"There's clearly nothing true in this piece of non-news – explains father Jaeger – All the world knows that for centuries the whole Catholic Church, everywhere in the world, has been waiting for the Cenacle to be given back to its rightful owners, the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land. This Sacred Place was bought by the Kings of Naples and given, with the Pope's blessing, to the Friars Minor in 1342. Then it was the Ottomans that expelled the Friars from the Cenacle under duress, but the Franciscans have never stopped claiming it back". As to the other sanctuaries mentioned in that piece of "non-news", the friar points out, "they are all peacefully held by different Catholic bodies, and, as to them, the Church has never wished anything but that they remain as such, unharmed. It seems this piece of non-news we are talking about has been given by some fundamentalist groups, in the attempt to stir up trouble in the friendly relations between the Catholic Church and the Jewish State, just before the Pope's arrival". |
