NRP to Support Anti-Prostitution Bill
(IsraelNN.com) The National Religious Party has decided to back a bill proposed by MK Zahava Gal-On (Meretz) that would make hiring a prostitute a criminal offense. Offenders could be sentenced to up to six months in prison.
NRP head MK Zevulun Orlev said Thursday that prostitution is disastrous primarily for women who work in the sex trade. "Israeli society must do everything possible to prevent this unlawful phenomena," he said.
MK Orlev made his decision after receiving support from Rabbi Yuval Sherlo, who gave him the Jewish perspective on prostitution. Jewish law holds the clients, the prostitute, and society responsible for prostitution, Rabbi Sherlo said, and not only the clients, as the law is meant to protect society as a whole from prostitution. Despite its failure to deter prostitutes, Rabbi Sherlo approved Gal-On's proposal as a good start.
