Blair, Olmert Meeting on Quartet Demands
(IsraelNN.com) Quartet Middle East envoy Tony Blair and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert are meeting at this hour in Jerusalem. Blair brought with him demands from the Quartet that Israel re-open Gaza border crossings. Despite the closure of those crossings for security reasons, the government has allowed hundreds of trucks to haul tons of basic necessities to Gaza residents.
His visit comes one day after an Iranian-made Grad missile slammed into the port city of Ashkelon, causing no injuries or major damage. Blair met with the Palestinian Authority (PA) on Tuesday and said "we have to get a lifting of access and movement restrictions." The former British Prime Minister also called for a "different and better" strategy for Gaza, based on economic aid for public works projects. "We should be doing everything we can to help the people in Gaza without helping those who are launching rockets on Israel and doing their best to undermine the [negotiating] process," he said.
