Abbas Ready To Talk on Condition of IDF Ceasefire
(IsraelNN.com) Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas told reporters Wednesday he is willing to resume negotiations with Israel for a new Arab state only after Israel announces a ceasefire in counterterrorist operations against rocket launching terrorists. The Israeli Security Cabinet decided early Wednesday afternoon "to bring about the cessation of rocket fire and other terrorist actions from Gaza...and to strike at the Hamas regime in Gaza." It added that IDF actions will include attacks "against launch areas and...projectile weapons' support network of activists and knowledge, and production and storage facilities and against other military and infrastructure targets".
Abbas met with visiting American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Tuesday and refused to make a public statement agreeing to her call for resumption of talks. "Certainly the Palestinian-Israeli negotiations must be resumed, but after reaching calm," he told reporters Wednesday.
A spokesman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said that Israel would hold fire if terrorists halt rocket attacks.
