Abbas Snubs Rice's Plea To Resume Negotiations
(IsraelNN.com) Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has refused to make a public statement accepting visiting American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's plea that he resume negotiations with Israel on the final status for a new Arab state within Israel's current borders. He said last week he is refusing to continue the talks because of Israeli counterterrorist operations against rocket attacks on Israel.
The New York Times reported that Abbas "seemed to relish a new role of standing up to the United States and Israel." Secretary Rice told Abbas met in Ramallah Tuesday, "I understand the difficulty of the current situation, Mr. President, but we must keep our eye on what we are trying to achieve." She is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Wednesday.
