Barak Asked to Protect Kibbutzim First
(IsraelNN.com) Defense Minister Ehud Barak asked the Cabinet to change a Gaza Belt fortification plan in order to fortify homes in kibbutzim (cooperative communities) near Gaza before doing the same in Sderot, IDF Army Radio reported Sunday. Barak also asked the Cabinet to fortify homes in towns within 4.7 kilometers of Gaza and not just those within 4.5 kilometers, a change that would include Kibbutz Be'eri in the fortification plan.
Some of Barak's opponents accused him of suggesting the changes for political reasons. Kibbutz residents have traditionally supported Barak's Labor party, and Kibbutz Be'eri in particular claims many party members as residents, they said.
