A Danish court has charged a Somali man with the attempted murder of a cartoonist whose 2005 drawings of Prophet Muhammad outraged Muslims around the world.
The Somali, whose name has been withheld as part of Danish privacy laws, was charged on Saturday with two counts of attempted murder.

The 28-year-old suspect was ordered held for four weeks on preliminary charges of attempting to murder the cartoonist, as well as the police officer who shot him.
Danish police shot and wounded the man, who was armed with an axe and a knife, after he had attempted to enter the home of cartoonist Kurt Westergaard in the eastern city of Aarhus late on Friday.

He appeared in court on a stretcher with a hand and leg in plaster casts.
He did not speak but, through his lawyer, he denied the charges of trying to kill Westergaard.
Westergaard, whose five-year-old granddaughter was in the home on a sleepover, sought shelter in a specially made safe room when the suspect broke a window of the home, Preben Nielsen of the Aarhus police said.
Michael Larsen, a police spokesman, said that authorities arrived at the house minutes after receiving an alarm set off by Westergaard alerting them to the intruder.
"[The authorities] found a person and he attacked the police with an axe and a knife. He was shot in the leg and the hand and he is in hospital [now]," Larsen told Al Jazeera .
The suspect's wounds were reportedly not life-threatening.
'Ties to al-Shabab'
"... the attempted assassination of the cartoonist Kurt Westergaard is terror related."
Danish security intelligence service
Officials from the Danish security and intelligence service, Pet, said the suspect, a Danish resident, had close ties to the Somali group, al-Shabab.
"Pet assess that the attempted assassination of the cartoonist Kurt Westergaard is terror related," the agency said in a statement.
"The arrested individual has close relations to the Somalian terror organisation al-Shabab and al-Qaeda leaders in East Africa, and he is also suspected of having been involved in terror related activities during his stay in East Africa."
Jens Hansen from Denmark's TV2 network said the suspect was known to the intelligence service because he had some connections to people with links to al-Qaeda.
"They had obviously not seen him as that dangerous [as to be] following him," Hansen told Al Jazeera from Aarhus.
"I think it's quite a big shock to the Danish population that this has happened ... Denmark is quite a small country and we see ourselves as quite peaceful people. It is like we say 'it can't happen here.'"
Under protection
Westergaard has been under police protection since his work appeared among a dozen cartoons published in the Danish Jyllands-Posten newspaper in 2005.
The drawings triggered violent protests a few months later in a number of countries around the world, and again when they were republished in 2008.
The protesters felt the cartoons had profoundly insulted Islam, which generally opposes any depiction of the Prophet, favourable or otherwise.
Several dozen people were killed during the riots at the time as angry crowds attacked Danish embassies around the world.

Sudan Incites Against New Danish Movie

(Israelnationalnews.com) A new Danish film portraying the Arab Muslim genocide against Black Africans in Darfur is being compared by the Sudanese government to the anti-Islamist film Fitna and to cartoons of Muhammad published in a Danish newspaper in 2005. The publication of those cartoons of the founder of Islam led to worldwide rioting and ongoing violence, including an attempt this week to kill one of the cartoonists.
A spokesman for Sudan's foreign ministry called the movie, Hævnen ("The Revenge"; also titled Civilization in English) by Susanne Bier, "racist". The film "should be seen as a new extension of the notorious Fitna movie and the cartoons which insult the prophet Muhammad," according to Sudanese officials.
Fitna, a 15-minute film produced by Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders, attempts to show the Islamic sources for, and promoters of, jihadist ideology in Europe. The film, released in 2008, led to Wilders being threatened with death and banned from Britain.
An earlier short film, Submission by Theo van Gogh, focused on the suppression of women under Islamic rule. After the film was broadcast in Holland in 2004, van Gogh was shot to death and mutilated by a Muslim assassin, Mohammed Bouyeri.
Bier's Hævnen is currently being filmed in Kenya and Denmark. It follows the life story of Darfur refugees from Sudan to a town in Denmark. The Danish Fyens Stiftstidende newspaper, which reported on the controversy, said that Hævnen is due to be released in August 2010.
Sudan claims the film will portray "nonexistent conditions", yet at the same time it will "prolong the war in Darfur." According to a Sudanese official, the Danish filmmakers paid refugees in Kenya to falsely portray victims of genocide in Sudan.
Attempt to Axe 'Muhammad Cartoonist' to Death
A man affiliated with Shabab Al-Mujahideen, the Somali branch of Al-Qaeda, attempted to murder Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard in his home on Saturday, January 2. Westergaard was one of the cartoonists whose work sparked mass rioting among Muslims worldwide in 2005. The attacker, who broke into the cartoonist's house bearing a knife and a hatchet, was shot and arrested by police.
Reacting to the reports, a Shabab spokesman praised the attack on the "devil who abused our prophet Mohammad." The group called "upon all Muslims around world to target people like [Westergaard]."
The Somali immigrant who tried to murder Westergaard, Muhideen Jelle, was previously involved in raising funds in Sweden for jihadist causes.
