Streamlined Conversions Okayed by Ministerial Committee
(IsraelNN.com) Recommendations submitted by a panel convened to streamline the conversion process in Israel have been approved by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and the Ministers' Immigration Committee.
According to a report by Haaretz, The list of measures includes:
• Establishment of a new conversion authority that would oversee rabbinical panels who determine whether a candidate is ready to convert, as well as supervise the conversion program itself
• A requirement that a representative of the rabbinical panel involved in conversion maintain contact and take the potential convert through the learning process
• Addition of 10 new rabbinical judges to the panels that deal with and determine the acceptability of candidates for conversion.
The program is designed to relax the process for gentile immigrants who wish to convert to Judaism after they become citizens, many of whom are from the former Soviet Union.
