Minister Approves Humanitarian Aid for Hevron Jews
(IsraelNN.com) Minister of Industry, Trade, and Labor Eli Yishai announced Sunday that Jewish residents of Peace House in Hevron would be permitted to begin renovations immediately. Yishai said the decision was made after consultations with Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
Last week, as the government was preparing to supply "humanitarian aid" to Arabs in Hamas-occupied Gaza, residents of Peace House applied for permission to install windows in the building to protect themselves against the fiercest storm of the winter to date. The defense establishment rejected the request, and residents were left to weather the storm without sufficient heating or electricity in the building.
Jewish community spokesman Noam Armon welcomed the decision to allow renovations to proceed, but called on the government to reverse racist and anti-Semitic laws preventing Jews from settling in Hevron. "We are still at risk of eviction," he said.
