Gov't Mulling Int'l Force in Gaza
(IsraelNN.com) Officials from the foreign and defense ministries are considering suggestions that an international force patrol Gaza. The studies are taking place despite previous estimates of military and government leaders that multi-national forces do not operate in Israel's best interests.
Foreign Ministry Director General Aaron Abramovitz recently told French officials that the United Nations Interim Forces (UNIFIL) are " not doing the job for which it was established, a fact that makes Israel question the value of employing a multinational force in Gaza."
One defense official said that a multinational force might be appropriate after a massive Israeli counter terrorist operation in the Gaza region or as part of a final agreement with the Palestinian Authority (PA). Government officials agree that despite the discussions, there is little chance of placing an international force in the area so long as Hamas is in control.
