Abbas: We're Negotiating Over Jerusalem
(IsraelNN.com) Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said Saturday that the PA and Israel are negotiating over Jerusalem. "The negotiating process has begun and it involved all of the 'core issues'—the issue of borders, the issue of refugees, and the issue of Jerusalem," Abbas said following a meeting with French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner in Ramallah.
Kouchner strongly criticized Israeli "settlements" in Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem. "Israel must completely freeze construction in the west bank [Judea and Samaria—ed.] and east Jerusalem," he said. Kouchner also called on Israel to "open Palestinian institutions in east Jerusalem."
The Shas party has threatened to leave the ruling coalition if Prime Minister Ehud Olmert agrees to negotiate the status of Jerusalem. Olmert said Friday that Jerusalem would be the last subject discussed during negotiations, and ensured Shas that construction in all neighborhoods of Jerusalem would continue.
