PM Aide: Fire Rabbis Who Disagree on Conversion
(IsraelNN.com) Cabinet Secretary Oved Yechezkel, an aide to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, has announced that the government will fire Rabbinate rabbis who refuse to recognize certain conversions. Rabbis in certain cities have refused to recognize some conversions, arguing that the supposed converts did not agree to keep Jewish law—a step that the rabbis see as fundamental to the conversion process. The state recognizes all those who undergo an orthodox conversion as Jewish, whether or not they keep Jewish law following their conversion.
Yechezkel said it was "unthinkable" that rabbis employed by the Rabbinate would not recognize all conversions performed by the Rabbinate. He said he had been informed of the issue by Reform and Conservative rabbis.
