Lethal avian flu found in Binyamina
Avian flu which was found among hens in a petting zoo near a Binyamina kindergarten is of the H5N1 strain which is lethal to humans, the Agriculture Ministry said Thursday.
People who came in contact with the birds over the past week and all of the children in the kindergarten were instructed to take preventative medicine, Israel Radio reported.
Veterinary services have ordered that all fowl within a three-kilometer range of the petting zoo be culled, the radio report stated. Poultry within a 10-kilometer range must be slaughtered in quarantine conditions and under the supervision of veterinary services, but it can be sold for food since the cooked meat presents no health hazard.
The birds in the petting zoo were tested for the disease after 18 out of 25 hens died in the last week.
A World Health Organization (WHO) official congratulated Israel on its quick response to the outbreak, saying the WHO had already been informed of the Agriculture Ministry's suspicions on Wednesday. If Israel's suspicions are confirmed, Dr. Joseph Dominique told Israel Radio, it should be very worried and take the necessary steps to contain the disease.
