Czech H1N1 vaccination chief gets swine flu
Czech chief public health officer Michael Vit said on Tuesday he had caught the H1N1 flu - only a day after the government put him in charge of deciding on mandatory vaccinations against the disease.
"I really have it. I have muscle problems, a headache, simply all symptoms of the flu," he told the Novinky.cz news site.
The 58-year-old deputy health minister had a vaccine against seasonal flu but acknowledged it "won't protect you against swine flu."
"As you see, I am a living example," Vit said. He said he was unlikely to get the swine flu vaccine now as "the organism will create certain anti-bodies."
The government has put Vit in charge of deciding whether there will be vaccinations of "all people indispensable for the functioning of the country" - from the military to politicians.
His appointment follows a decision to vaccinate Czech soldiers which angered ultra-liberal Czech President Vaclav Klaus who dismissed it as "trampling elementary human freedoms".
Official data show the Czech Republic registered 2 340 patients with swine flu and 95 victims of the disease last week. - Sapa-AFP
