by Emanuel A. Winston, a Middle East Analyst & CommentatorThe appellation: "The Poison Dwarf" first belonged to Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger. He was not trusted by many in Washington because he was known to be ruthless to friends and foes alike. He got what he wanted, usually by leaving trail of broken bones of those he rolled over. Now that he is gratefully dead, the appellation: "The Poison Dwarf" has become generic for many in the world of politics and the military.
Barak has a record that speaks of manipulation, blunders and an inflated ego that generates ideas which have a short vision. In a way we see those traits also in Shimon Peres and Ehud Olmert.
Barak, in his early years, was selected as a P.C. (Politically Correct Candidate for higher office). That included a special status in the Army where he would be quickly advanced and given high profile missions that generated commendations and medals. The Labor Party people also built an aura around him as a thinker, a visionary and a future candidate for political office. Regrettably, his smarts were more of the manipulation variety than that of a deep thinker and a visionary. In brief, he was not Arik Sharon, either at the military level nor at the political level. (Note! I do recognize Sharon's personal failures toward the last years of his life.)
Barak performed as expected in his grooming to be a political figure for the Labor Party. Like Rabin he was coddled and protected by the "old boys' club" of Generals. Mistakes were covered over (like walking away from the investigation of the double helicopter crash that killed Israeli soldiers/ordering the running out of Israel's Security zone in Southern Lebanon in the middle of the night, leaving weapons, vehicles and allies among the South Lebanese).
Anything that seemed worthy of notice was inflated by the Leftist political parties and the Media. In essence, he was the perennial candidate for higher office, representing the Left.
Unfortunately, his vaunted vision was flawed. He thought the dream of his thinking was flawless and, therefore, like an Arab/Muslim, whatever passed his lips must be "true". However, he was strangely gullible, easily fooled by Arafat and the Americans. In that he was not a great deal different from Rabin and Peres and many Jewish leaders.
A little intense conversation, some "Sincere Promises", a little ego massage and men like Barak, Rabin, Peres will follow you anywhere. They were so easily suckered time and again but, after each failure, were always ready to swallow the next set of promises. Leaders who desperately want to believe will find any and every reason to delude themselves. Appropo of Bush looking in Putin's eyes and seeing his "honest" soul. Why are their people like me, among others, who are suspicious of dedicated enemies bringing flowers, smiles and promises.
Have you noticed that Russia is back to being Soviets while China promises anything but builds its military, a Blue Sea Navy and is hostile to America on many levels. Have you ever noticed that Arab/Muslims do not keep agreements - except for a brief time to gain their objectives (like getting stronger militarily) and then they abrogate the terms using any excuse that comes to mind.
Neither Barak nor Olmert are capable of fighting the next war. Barak has proven his judgement is flawed. Olmert who couldn't care less if Israel were hit by a saturation missile attack - only wishes to remain in office. As part of his defense of his absolute failure in the Lebanon War of 2006, he tells all that it is "his responsibility to fix what was broken in the army and, therefore, must remain in office".
Only a twisty shyster lawyer could offer such a rationale. How does one re-educate oneself when your prior record of abysmal stupidity remains constant? This old dog cannot learn new tricks, given the only old tricks he knew was how to be twisty.
Olmert served only as a lowly corporal in the IDF PR department and has no idea of what it means to make plans and train an army. He has no concept of how Israel's Muslim enemy(ies) think, plan, organize and strike.
Lebanon 2006 proved Olmert doesn't know how to run a war. Running away from Lebanon in 2000 proves that Barak doesn't know how to run the IDF, deal with an enemy, or protect the home front.
Even on the Home Front, we see Barak engaged in the torture of deprivation in trying to drive the Jews out of Hebron as an accommodation to give the Palestinians Arab Muslims another State. Here he has deliberately thwarted the Courts by NOT allowing a building, Beit HaShalom purchased legally, free and clear for almost $1,000,000 to hook up to electricity and heat. Barak will not allow the roof to be tarred to stop the leaks and will not allow windows to be installed. It's snowing in Hebron and below zero. These families have young children, including toddlers and a new baby. In this bit of torture through deprivation, he has joined Olmert in his pledge to President Bush and Secretary Rice to stop construction in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria. The duo of Bush and Olmert are a mortal danger to the country and should be removed from office for their incompetence and perfidy.
As for the Winograd redacted report, what has taken out before its issuance in collusion with Olmert, should put Winograd and Olmert into jail for the introduction of tampered evidence. I cannot understand why the entire nation doesn't go out on strike, along with the military - demanding these scoundrels leave office immediately.
Imagine at least a million people, coming to Jerusalem with staffs to thump the ground, drums to beat and shofars to blow - in unison so the very foundation of Olmert's office and the Knesset building shakes as if in an earthquake. We are told that 56% of the Israeli people want this government to fall but, actually remain silent and obedient.
