Total Solar Eclipse of July 22, 2009

For those who follow Astronomy and Astrology, the Total Solar Eclipse of July 22, 2009 is of extreme importance as it is the longest one the Earth will experience in the 21st century until June 13, 2132.  NASA published the eclipse's path as projected by Fred Espenak and Jay Anderson. These spots are the best places on Earth to view this most anticipated eclipse.
Explorers who wish to experience this event first hand would need to travel to parts of Asia to see the total solar eclipse.  A few of these places are still under alert for travelers. The following information on the path of the total solar eclipse has been extracted and reproduced from NASA's Total Solar Eclipse of 2009 July 22 by Espenak and Anderson 2008.

On Wednesday, 2009 July 22, an exceptionally long total eclipse of the Sun is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses the Eastern Hemisphere. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow begins in India and crosses through Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, and China. After leaving mainland Asia, the path crosses Japan's Ryukyu Islands and curves southeast through the Pacific Ocean where the maximum duration of totality reaches 6 min 39 s (Espenak and Anderson 2006). A partial eclipse is seen within the much broader path of the Moon's penumbral shadow, which includes most of eastern Asia, Indonesia, and the Pacific Ocean.
Umbral Path and Visibility
The central line of the Moon's shadow begins at 00:53 UT (Universal Time) in India's Gulf of Khambhat (Bay of Cambay). Because the Moon passes through perigee just 4 ½ hours earlier (July 21 at 20:16 UT), its close proximity to Earth produces an unusually wide path of totality.
The eclipse track is 205 km wide at its start as the umbra quickly travels east-northeast. The Sun is only 3° above the northeastern horizon when the coastal city of Surat, India (pop. ~4 million) experiences a 3 min 14 s total eclipse.  Racing inland, the shadow reaches Indore where its 1.8 million inhabitants are plunged into totality for 3 min 5 s.
At mid-eclipse (00:53:30 UT), the Sun hangs a mere 6° above the horizon. After covering 700 km along the central line in the first 39 seconds of its 3+ hour-long trajectory across our planet, the umbra's ground speed is rapidly decelerating. Nevertheless, with a velocity of 8.9 km/s, it still exceeds the speed of sound (1230 km/h) by a factor of 26 times. Bhopal (pop. 1.5 million) lies 40 km north of the central line. Even at this distance, it succumbs to 3 min 9 s of the total phase, just 19 s less than the maximum duration at the path's center. By 00:55 UT, the umbra is in central India where it stretches diagonally across 2/3 of the country.
Due to the Sun's low altitude, the shadow is a highly elongated ellipse with a major axis of ~1000 km, nearly 5 times its minor axis. Approximately 400 km north of the path, the Taj Mahal in Agra experiences a deep partial eclipse of magnitude 0.906 at 00:56 UT. Just three minutes into its course, the path width is 218 km while the shadow's velocity drops to 3.8 km/s. On the central line, the Sun stands 14° above the horizon during the 3 min 45 s total phase. Varanasi and Pata both lie within the shadow's path as the central line crosses the sacred Ganges River.
About 500 km to the southeast, the populace of Kolkata (Calcutta, pop. ~4.5 million) can view a partial eclipse of magnitude 0.911. Eastern India narrows to a 25-km-wide corridor as it squeezes between Nepal and Bangladesh. The shadow reaches this region at 00:58 UT. Outside the path, Kathmandu experiences a partial eclipse of magnitude 0.962, while Dacca witnesses a 0.930 magnitude event. The eclipse's central line reaches Bhutan, at 00:59 UT. Now six minutes and 2000+ km into its trek, the path width has grown to 224 km, the ground velocity is 2.6 km/s and the central duration exceeds 4 min.
After leaving Bhutan, the track continues through India in the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The center of the umbra reaches the India-China border at 01:05 UT. The Sun is now 28° high, the shadow's ground velocity is 1.8 km/s and the duration of totality is 4 min 26 s. The southern half of the umbra briefly sweeps across northern Burma (Myanmar) before the entire shadow enters China's Yunnan province and the Tibet Autonomous Region.
The lunar shadow runs through the middle of Sichuan province where the capital city of Chengdu (pop. ~2.3 million) is totally eclipsed for 3 min 16 s at 01:13 UT. On the central line 88 km to the south, the duration is 4 min 52 s. The urban center of the Chongqing municipality is 69 km south of the central line (Figure 12), but its ~4.1 million inhabitants still share a totality lasting 4 min 06 s (01:15 UT). Because all of China is in one time zone (UT + 8 h), UT times and can be converted to local Chinese time by adding 8 hours.  Hubei province's capital Wuhan (pop. ~ 9.7 million) is the fourth largest city in China. It lies just 20 km south of the central line and enjoys a duration of 5 min 25 s at 01:27 UT.
The Sun's altitude is 48°, the path width is 244 km and the umbra's velocity is 1.0 km/s. The Yangtze River meanders through the eclipse track as the shadow proceeds east.  Hangzhou (pop. ~3.9 million), the capital of Zhejiang province, is 52 km south of the central line and witnesses a total eclipse of 5 min 19 s (01:37 UT). In spite of Hangzhou's location, only 32 s are to be gained by traveling north to the central line where the duration is 5 min 51 s.  Shanghai is China's largest city (pop. ~18.7 million).  Located 66 km north of the central line, Shanghai still manages to receive 5 min of totality (01:39 UT). While the central line offers a total phase lasting 5 min 55 s, it is already over Hangzhou Bay and heading out to sea. The 128 islands of the Dinghai district southeast of Shanghai, make up the last Chinese land within the eclipse track (01:41 UT).
After crossing the East China Sea, the umbra encounters Japan's Ryukyu Islands (a.k.a. Nansei Islands) at 01:57 UT. The chain contains dozens of islands stretching across the entire eclipse path. Yakushima, the largest island in the path is near the northern limit and experiences 3 min 57 s of totality. Akuseki-shima is closest to the central line; it gets a 6 min 20 s total eclipse. To the north, Tokyo, Japan's capital city witnesses a partial eclipse of magnitude 0.747 (02:13 UT).
The shadow encounters the remote Japanese islands of Iwo Jima and Kitaio Jima at approximately 02:27 UT.  The durations of totality from the two islands are 5 min 13 s and 6 min 34 s, respectively. The instant of greatest eclipse occurs at 02:35:19 UT (latitude 24° 13?N, longitude 144° 07?E) when the axis of the Moon's shadow passes closest to the center of Earth (gamma1 = +0.06977). The maximum duration of totality here is 6 min 39 s, the Sun's altitude is 86°, the path width is 258 km, and the umbra's velocity is 0.65 km/s.
Having already traversed 7550 km, the central line has an additional 7600 km to go until its terminus. Unfortunately, the remainder of the path makes no major landfall; it arcs southeast through the Pacific Ocean hitting only a handful of small atolls. Nearly an hour passes before the Moon's shadow reaches Enewetak Atoll in the Marshall Islands. Infamous for its use as a nuclear test site in the 1950s, Enewetak experiences a total eclipse with a duration of 5 min 38 s at 03:31 UT. The Sun's altitude is 57°, the path width is 254 km, and the umbra's velocity is 0.85 km/s. Several other Marshall Islands atolls are in the eclipse track including Namorik, Kili, and Jaluit.
Continuing through Kiribati (Gilbert Islands), Butaritari atoll lies near the central line (Figure 18) where the maximum duration of 4 min 48 s occurs at 03:56 UT. The eclipse track's final landfall takes place on Nikumaroro Island (Gardner Island) in Kiribati's Phoenix Island group.
From Nikumaroro, the total phase lasts 3 min 39 s, while the central line 40 km to the south offers a duration of 3 min 58 s (04:11 UT). The Sun's altitude is 20°, the path width is 228 km and the ground speed is 2.6 km/s.  The lunar shadow once again becomes a long, drawn-out ellipse. In its final few minutes, the umbra's velocity accelerates while the Sun's altitude and the central duration decrease. As the Moon's shadow lifts off Earth and returns to space, the central line ends at 04:18 UT.
Over the course of 3 h 25 min, the umbra travels along a track approximately 15,150 km long that covers 0.71% of Earth's surface area.





3. Eclipse of the Sun according to the Chachamim

The sages tell us that a solar eclipse is a bad omen for the goyim, and a lunar eclipse is a bad omen for the Jews, G-d forbid. Explanation: In this world, there exists an ongoing struggle between Israel and the nations. The moon symbolizes the Jewish People, while the sun symbolizes the gentiles. For everything in nature and in our physical world are symbols for spiritual things. And so when a solar eclipse occurs, this phenomenon in nature symbolizes an "eclipse" of the goyim who are represented by the sun.

In similar fashion, the sages say that if a Jew has a trial against a gentile, he should try to have the trial fall during the month of Adar, which is a lucky month for the Jews, and not during the month of Av, which is an unlucky month. Does this mean that the Jew MUST win during the month of Adar, or during a solar eclipse? No. It means that G-d set down certain times which are more favorable than others, and if the Jew makes an effort, or improves his ways, he has a greater opportunity to succeed during that time.

Therefore, if at the time of the solar eclipse, the Jews would make an effort, even a relatively small one, in the right direction - it would be enough to bring success against the goyim. But if the Jews insist on doing the very opposite - if during the solar eclipse (and that's exactly what happened), the government of Israel meets with the Arabs on how to fulfill the Wye Agreement to the letter, then obviously there isn't an eclipse or any other "mazal" that will help us. For we, with our very hands, bring about our own lunar eclipse.(which symbolizes Israel).

When we don't take capitalize on the many opportunities which G-d gives us to remove ourselves from the mud we have placed ourselves in, we can only blame ourselves. In conclusion, free choice is stronger than all the omens and "mazals", and is essentially THE deciding factor.

Hello everyone,

"Long time no have" a real long chat. Apparently now is a very good time to take stock of what we have achieved so far, where we should go, and since the universe is giving us a nudge tomorrow, GET STARTED.

The way I see it, we have mostly come to UNDERSTAND a whole lot of things about the world we live in, that are not necessarily evident to the unsuspecting eye.

Just as an example, tomorrow is the beginning of the Jerusalem Conference. I took a look at their website, since one of our friends was interested in attending. Frankly, the only thing it elicited from me was one big yawn: same tired faces, same arguments, same beating around the bush and not facing up to the REAL issues AM Yisrael has to grapple with, now more than ever.

I think Jews do understand that there is an existential war being fought against us, but not necessarily BY WHOM. Of course, the Muslims are raging maniacs, violent, uncontrollable beasts ( just see some pictures below of recent events in Malmö, Sweden: the place is apparently almost totally taken over by wild Muslim immigrants, and the authorities are having a terrible time controlling the rage. Just one example among many; see France, England, Holland, etc. I really believe that Europe does feel overwhelmed by them, and doesn't know what to do, besides throwing the Jews to the wolves), ready to kill us in an instant.

But there is a much greater and more dangerous war being fought against us, which typical conferences such as the one taking place tomorrow don't address: the war against the Jews and Israel directed, choreographed, engineered, and diabolically manipulated by the Vatican worldwide. Today was a day when the Jewish world finally saw, clear as day, the true face of Rome. Until now they could always deny, make excuses, forgive. But today was a day of clarity, even for typical court Jews. WELCOME TO THE WORLD! We have now seen the duplicity, the lies, the plain evil coming out of that den of iniquity. Rehabilitating a bishop who professes, not only that the Holocaust never happened, but even more ominously, that the INQUISITION IS THE WAY TO DEAL WITH US JEWS! NOW DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT I HAVE TRIED TO POUND INTO YOUR HEADS FOR  OVER TWO YEARS?

THIS POPE IS THE GRAND INQUISITOR, THIS IS HIS LIFE'S WORK, AND HE INTENDS TO COMPLETE IT TO THE FULLEST, UNLESS WE STOP HIM!

ENOUGH BEING TIMOROUS, THE TIME TO CONFRONT THEM IS NOW OR NEVER!

We have to start massive demonstrations against the Vatican and the Ford Foundation, both in America and in Israel.

As far as America, Eric Phelps has told us WHERE to demonstrate. All we need is a few good men and women to do the job.

In Israel we SHOULD demonstrate as well. Somebody suggested Mt Zion. I have no problem with that; alternatively, we could possibly demonstrate in front of the Franciscan's headquarters, by Jaffa Gate. It doesn't matter where: the main thing is to do it, to confront them once and for all, to let them know that we know about their shenanigans, that we are pointing the finger where it belongs, with proper signs exposing them clearly. And at the same time let's expose our nice Catholic Jesuit coadjutor Edward Mitchell of Georgetown University, ready to come here and force us to control our population growth in Yesha.

I think it would be a lot more effective than demonstrating against the UN, who are after all only the MOUTHPIECE of the Vatican.

So, who is for it? Who is ready to organize one or more demonstrations, both in NY and in Jerusalem , against the Vatican and the Ford Foundation?

( the question is whether we will get the permits from the respective authorities. It is hitting so close to home, I am not sure. Peres might interfere in Israel. PARIS (AFP) — A few lucky people in the Indian Ocean will be treated to a rare event on Monday when an annular solar eclipse will transform the Sun into a dark disc with a blazing ring-shaped corona around its rim.

In solar eclipses, the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, casting its shadow on the terrestrial surface.

In an annular eclipse, a tiny shift in distance that results from celestial mechanics means the Moon does not completely cover the Sun's face, as it does in a total eclipse.

Instead, for those directly under the alignment, the Moon covers most of the Sun's surface, and a ring-like crown of solar light blazes from the edge of the disk.

For those watching from the fringe of the track, the Sun is partially obscured, as if a bite has been taken out of it.

According to veteran NASA eclipse-watcher Fred Espenak, the total eclipse track will run from west to east on Monday from 0606 GMT to 0952 GMT.

It will traverse the Indian Ocean and western Indonesia before petering out just short of Mindanao, the Philippines.

The partial eclipse will be seen in a much wider swathe, including the southern third of Africa, Madagascar, Australia, Southeast India, Southeast Asia and Indonesia.

It will be the only annular solar eclipse this year. The last was on 7 February, 2007, and after Monday, the next one will be on 15 January, 2010.

The big event for eclipse junkies this year is on July 22, when a total solar eclipse will be visible from India and China, the world's two most populous countries.

In a move that many Jewish community officials said would cause relations between Jews and Catholics to further deteriorate, the Vatican on Saturday lifted an excommunication ban against Bishop Richard Williamson, one of four bishops who were banned in 1988 for taking on the office of bishop against the wishes of then-Pope John Paul II.

Williamson is a Holocaust denier, and has repeatedly said that the gas chambers did not exist and that no more than 300,000 Jews were killed during World War II, mostly of starvation. In addition, Williamson has declared that the Jews are plotting to take over the world, and that the U.S. and Israel were behind 9/11.

In an interview with Swedish television conducted last November but broadcast last week, Williamson said that he believed that there were "no gas chambers."

"Between 200,000-300,000 perished in Nazi concentration camps, but not one of them by gassing in a gas chamber," he said, adding, "I believe that the historical evidence is hugely against 6 million having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler."

Williamson has had a long history of Holocaust denial. In a 1989 sermon in Sherbrooke, Canada, Williamson said that "there was not one Jew killed in the gas chambers. It was all lies, lies, lies. The Jews created the Holocaust so we would prostrate ourselves on our knees before them and approve of their new State of Israel... Jews made up the Holocaust, Protestants get their orders from the devil, and the Vatican has sold its soul to liberalism." In dozens of sermons and letters, Richardson reiterated the same theme, adding that Hitler "liberated" Germany from the Jews.

Richardson advocates a return to the Middle Ages, with the Inquisition the preferred model of the Catholic relationship to Jews. "As Catholic faith goes up, so Jewish power goes down, while as Catholic faith goes down, so Jewish power goes up. In the Catholic Middle Ages, the Jews were relatively impotent to harm Christendom. But as Catholics have grown over the centuries weaker and weaker in the faith, especially since Vatican II, so the Jews have come closer and closer to fulfilling their substitute-Messianic drive towards world dominion... When Spanish Catholics were truly Catholic, God granted them by 1492 to reconquer Spain from the Arabs, and then granted them to create a Catholic empire in the Americas."

Jewish community officials have expressed serious concerns over the Pope's move. Rabbi Shmuel Ricardo Di Segni, the Chief Rabbi of Rome, told reporters that the rehabilitation of Williamson opens "a deep wound" in Catholic-Jewish relations.

The Anti-Defamation League, an anti-Semitism watchdog group, said that the reinstatement "could become a source of great tension between Catholics and Jews." The umbrella group of Jewish communities in France called Williamson "a contemptible liar whose sole objective is to reawaken centuries-old hatred against the Jews."

In a report, Reuters quoted Mordechai Lewy, Israel's ambassador to the Vatican, as saying that Israel "has no intention of interfering in the internal workings of the Catholic Church. However, the eagerness to bring a Holocaust denier back into the Church will cast a shadow on relations between Jews and the Catholic Church."

A Vatican spokesman said that the lifting of the ban had nothing to do with Williamson's views. "It has nothing to do with the personal opinions of a person, which are open to criticism, but are not pertinent to this decree."

24 hours elapsed since I sent this e-mail: I see whole armies have volunteered!...

Seriously, how come ONLY ONE PERSON responded positively to my call to go after the Ford Foundation and the Vatican? Don't you think it is important? Or is it that you are scared? We have to start massive demonstrations against the Vatican and the Ford Foundation, both in America and in Israel.

As far as America, Eric Phelps has told us WHERE to demonstrate. All we need is a few good men and women to do the job.

In Israel we SHOULD demonstrate as well. Somebody suggested Mt Zion. I have no problem with that; alternatively, we could possibly demonstrate in front of the Franciscan's headquarters, by Jaffa Gate. It doesn't matter where: the main thing is to do it, to confront them once and for all, to let them know that we know about their shenanigans, that we are pointing the finger where it belongs, with proper signs exposing them clearly. And at the same time let's expose our nice Catholic Jesuit coadjutor Edward Mitchell of Georgetown University, ready to come here and force us to control our population growth in Yesha.

I think it would be a lot more effective than demonstrating against the UN, who are after all only the MOUTHPIECE of the Vatican.

So, who is for it? Who is ready to organize one or more demonstrations, both in NY and in Jerusalem , against the Vatican and the Ford Foundation?

( the question is whether we will get the permits from the respective authorities. It is hitting so close to home, I am not sure. Peres might interfere in Israel. But the nice thing is, for once we are NOT directly demonstrating against the Israeli government , so THEY shouldn't feel too threatened! Who knows, they might even breathe a sigh of relief!)

PARIS (AFP) — A few lucky people in the Indian Ocean will be treated to a rare event on Monday when an annular solar eclipse will transform the Sun into a dark disc with a blazing ring-shaped corona around its rim.

In solar eclipses, the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, casting its shadow on the terrestrial surface.

In an annular eclipse, a tiny shift in distance that results from celestial mechanics means the Moon does not completely cover the Sun's face, as it does in a total eclipse.

Instead, for those directly under the alignment, the Moon covers most of the Sun's surface, and a ring-like crown of solar light blazes from the edge of the disk.

For those watching from the fringe of the track, the Sun is partially obscured, as if a bite has been taken out of it.

According to veteran NASA eclipse-watcher Fred Espenak, the total eclipse track will run from west to east on Monday from 0606 GMT to 0952 GMT.

It will traverse the Indian Ocean and western Indonesia before petering out just short of Mindanao, the Philippines.

The partial eclipse will be seen in a much wider swathe, including the southern third of Africa, Madagascar, Australia, Southeast India, Southeast Asia and Indonesia.

It will be the only annular solar eclipse this year. The last was on 7 February, 2007, and after Monday, the next one will be on 15 January, 2010.

The big event for eclipse junkies this year is on July 22, when a total solar eclipse will be visible from India and China, the world's two most populous countries.

The sages tell us that a solar eclipse is a bad omen for the goyim, and a lunar eclipse is a bad omen for the Jews, G-d forbid. Explanation: In this world, there exists an ongoing struggle between Israel and the nations. The moon symbolizes the Jewish People, while the sun symbolizes the gentiles. For everything in nature and in our physical world are symbols for spiritual things. And so when a solar eclipse occurs, this phenomenon in nature symbolizes an "eclipse" of the goyim who are represented by the sun.

In similar fashion, the sages say that if a Jew has a trial against a gentile, he should try to have the trial fall during the month of Adar, which is a lucky month for the Jews, and not during the month of Av, which is an unlucky month. Does this mean that the Jew MUST win during the month of Adar, or during a solar eclipse? No. It means that G-d set down certain times which are more favorable than others, and if the Jew makes an effort, or improves his ways, he has a greater opportunity to succeed during that time.

Therefore, if at the time of the solar eclipse, the Jews would make an effort, even a relatively small one, in the right direction - it would be enough to bring success against the goyim. But if the Jews insist on doing the very opposite - if during the solar eclipse (and that's exactly what happened), the government of Israel meets with the Arabs on how to fulfill the Wye Agreement to the letter, then obviously there isn't an eclipse or any other "mazal" that will help us. For we, with our very hands, bring about our own lunar eclipse.(which symbolizes Israel).

When we don't take capitalize on the many opportunities which G-d gives us to remove ourselves from the mud we have placed ourselves in, we can only blame ourselves. In conclusion, free choice is stronger than all the omens and "mazals", and is essentially THE deciding factor.

In a move that many Jewish community officials said would cause relations between Jews and Catholics to further deteriorate, the Vatican on Saturday lifted an excommunication ban against Bishop Richard Williamson, one of four bishops who were banned in 1988 for taking on the office of bishop against the wishes of then-Pope John Paul II.

Williamson is a Holocaust denier, and has repeatedly said that the gas chambers did not exist and that no more than 300,000 Jews were killed during World War II, mostly of starvation. In addition, Williamson has declared that the Jews are plotting to take over the world, and that the U.S. and Israel were behind 9/11.

In an interview with Swedish television conducted last November but broadcast last week, Williamson said that he believed that there were "no gas chambers."

"Between 200,000-300,000 perished in Nazi concentration camps, but not one of them by gassing in a gas chamber," he said, adding, "I believe that the historical evidence is hugely against 6 million having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler."

Williamson has had a long history of Holocaust denial. In a 1989 sermon in Sherbrooke, Canada, Williamson said that "there was not one Jew killed in the gas chambers. It was all lies, lies, lies. The Jews created the Holocaust so we would prostrate ourselves on our knees before them and approve of their new State of Israel... Jews made up the Holocaust, Protestants get their orders from the devil, and the Vatican has sold its soul to liberalism." In dozens of sermons and letters, Richardson reiterated the same theme, adding that Hitler "liberated" Germany from the Jews.

Richardson advocates a return to the Middle Ages, with the Inquisition the preferred model of the Catholic relationship to Jews. "As Catholic faith goes up, so Jewish power goes down, while as Catholic faith goes down, so Jewish power goes up. In the Catholic Middle Ages, the Jews were relatively impotent to harm Christendom. But as Catholics have grown over the centuries weaker and weaker in the faith, especially since Vatican II, so the Jews have come closer and closer to fulfilling their substitute-Messianic drive towards world dominion... When Spanish Catholics were truly Catholic, God granted them by 1492 to reconquer Spain from the Arabs, and then granted them to create a Catholic empire in the Americas."

Jewish community officials have expressed serious concerns over the Pope's move. Rabbi Shmuel Ricardo Di Segni, the Chief Rabbi of Rome, told reporters that the rehabilitation of Williamson opens "a deep wound" in Catholic-Jewish relations.

The Anti-Defamation League, an anti-Semitism watchdog group, said that the reinstatement "could become a source of great tension between Catholics and Jews." The umbrella group of Jewish communities in France called Williamson "a contemptible liar whose sole objective is to reawaken centuries-old hatred against the Jews."

In a report, Reuters quoted Mordechai Lewy, Israel's ambassador to the Vatican, as saying that Israel "has no intention of interfering in the internal workings of the Catholic Church. However, the eagerness to bring a Holocaust denier back into the Church will cast a shadow on relations between Jews and the Catholic Church."

A Vatican spokesman said that the lifting of the ban had nothing to do with Williamson's views. "It has nothing to do with the personal opinions of a person, which are open to criticism, but are not pertinent to this decree."

Lunar eclipse to occur Wednesday night

The last total lunar eclipse until 2010 occurs Wednesday night, with cameo appearances by Saturn and the bright star Regulus on either side of the veiled full moon.

Skywatchers viewing through a telescope will have the added treat of seeing Saturn's handsome rings.

Weather permitting, the total eclipse can be seen from North and South America. People in Europe and Africa will be able to see it high in the sky before dawn on Thursday.

As the moonlight dims — it won't go totally dark — Saturn and Regulus will pop out and sandwich the moon. Regulus is the brightest star in the constellation Leo.

Jack Horkheimer, host of the PBS show "Star Gazer," called the event "the moon, the lord of the rings and heart of the lion eclipse."

Wednesday's event will be the last total lunar eclipse until Dec. 20, 2010. Last year there were two.

The weather could be a spoiler for many in the United States. Cloudy skies are expected for most of the Western states with a chance of snow from the heartland to the East Coast, said Stuart Seto of the National Weather Service.

"It looks like it's going to be a hard one to spot," Seto said.

A total lunar eclipse occurs when the full moon passes into Earth's shadow and is blocked from the sun's rays that normally illuminate it. During an eclipse, the sun, Earth and moon line up, leaving a darkened moon visible to observers on the night side of the planet.

The moon doesn't go black because indirect sunlight still reaches it after passing through the Earth's atmosphere. Since the atmosphere filters out blue light, the indirect light that reaches the moon transforms it into a reddish or orange tinge, depending on how much dust and cloud cover are in the atmosphere at the time.

Wednesday's total eclipse phase will last nearly an hour. Earth's shadow is expected to blot out the moon beginning around 7 p.m. on the West Coast and 10 p.m. on the East Coast. West Coast skygazers will miss the start of the eclipse because it occurs before the moon rises.

Unlike solar eclipses which require protective eyewear, lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye.

Later this year, in August, there will be a total solar eclipse and a partial lunar eclipse.

This week, in parshat Vaera, we read about the first seven plagues that Hashem visited upon Egypt and Pharaoh for oppressing Israel, so that he would finally let us go. We saw last week how the events of the Exodus are a forerunner of today's happenings:

This week is another striking such example:

Each time the pope and his helpers attempt to squeeze Israel, to squeeze the Jewish People to the point of strangulation, when we already despair and worry about our very life, Hashem sends us His salvation.

Each of the five occurrences I am recalling below happened at times when we were in a great crisis. Case in point, this DRILL -CONFERENCE I just wrote about today. Each time we already despaired of being able to handle the situation, and this drill is no different; the threat of the "NEW" WORLD ORDER, but really the old, well known world's aggression against Am Yisrael is becoming unbearable once again.

One of our friends pointed out to me the strange coincidence of both occurrences at the same time, the Haiti earthquake, and the conference-drill in Tel -Aviv... and then my eyes opened up. Thank you, Ezra!

Also to be noted is tomorrow night's SOLAR ECLIPSE.

Notice also that the FIFTH PLAGUE, DEVER, had to do with EPIDEMICS. G-d's justice is perfect. They wanted to sow diseases in our midst: instead THEY are getting DEVER.

Pay attention, as well, to the WORD, DEVER. The root of the word is DAVAR, speak, word: they had a CONFERENCE, DISCUSSING HOW BEST TO HARM US. Instead, THEY were harmed.

Notice also the name, HAITI. 

In Hebrew, Ha'iti means: I WAS. With other words, I AM NO MORE. 

As opposed to the Eternal, WHO WAS, IS, AND WILL BE.

I understand this to mean:

The POPE AND HIS MINIONS ARE NO MORE. THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF THEIR END.

...Caritas Workers Bring Hope To Area of Grave Destruction
ROME, APRIL 7, 2009 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI is sending aid to earthquake victims in the form of Vatican firemen, while Caritas workers move forward to assist the affected towns.
Eight rescue workers, sent by the Holy See with the express permission of the Pope, have been collaborating since Monday to help victims of the earthquake in the Abruzzo region, said the corps' commander, Domenico Giani, on Vatican Radio.
The earthquake, measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale, struck close to the city of L'Aquila, around 70 miles northeast of Rome. Officials report 228 dead, 15 people missing, and around 1,000 injured.
The official explained: "During the night, no sooner than the tragedy was known, I spoke with our superiors, with Bishop Renato Boccardo and Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, secretary and president respectively of the Governor's Office for Vatican City State. Then we informed the Holy Father, the Secretary of State and the whole Secretariat."
"It seemed to us obligatory, at this time of great sorrow, that a team of our firemen should be present to give a hand," he added, explaining that the Vatican security forces "are also prepared in this area of security and civil protection."
Team approach.
The Vatican sent a structural engineer to the area, and an eight-member team, with resources for civil protection and aid for the population.
The team is working in collaboration with the Italian emergency services in one of the most affected areas, the village of Onna, where 41 of the 250 inhabitants perished.

Giani said, "They worked throughout the night, recovering bodies, but now they are dedicated above all to helping the population, recovering what can be salvaged and giving moral support.

"The Holy See," he added, "with its different structures -- Cor Unum, Caritas -- always takes aid in the name of the Holy Father, when there is an emergency." "In this case," he said, "in addition to material and economic aid, professional help has also been provided.

The engineer, Paolo De Angelis, explained on Vatican Radio that the situation "is disastrous" and that despite this, "solidarity between persons" is being manifested.
He continued: "We have been received very positively: this is the message we wished to bring, a message of solidarity which the population has fully welcomed.

"The present climate among the inhabitants is one of consternation. Here above all what people need is consolation, as they have been left without anything by the earthquake."

Grave destruction
Father Vittorio Nozza, the director of Caritas in Italy, told ZENIT that the earthquake's destruction has been very grave, and "not one single house was spared from demolition."
He arrived today to L'Aquila and met with the diocesan bishop, Archbishop Giuseppe Molinari, and with the regional director of Caritas, Alberto Conti.

He said Caritas is meeting with each of the parish priests of the area "to hear firsthand what the most urgent needs are."

They agreed "to divide the affected territory into seven areas to facilitate a homogeneous aid intervention." A coordination center for Italian and diocesan Caritas is to be established immediately which will work not only during this time of emergency but also in the long-term for the region's reconstruction.
They stated the goal to provide places of shelter for children, the elderly and the sick, so that adults can dedicate themselves to reorganizing their daily life.
The priest said: "There is much composure in the villages we have been to, but in places where they have lost one or more loved ones, the question is very strong: Where is God? We answer this question with prayer and our closeness."
Father Dionisio Rodriguez, local Caritas director and pastor in Paganica, a town close to L'Aquila, plans to celebrate Easter Sunday Mass on a sports field for the earthquake victims.
"Easter Sunday offers a sign of hope and optimism," he said, "People aren't feeling much joy at the moment, but Easter Sunday provides us with a sign of life and renewal."

Haitian Archbishop Killed in Earthquake

Pope Calls for Prayers, Emergency Aid


PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, JAN. 13, 2010- Benedict XVI is appealing for aid for victims of the earthquake that devastated Haiti and killed the archbishop of the Port-au-Prince Archdiocese.

Archbishop Joseph Serge-Miot was reported dead after the Tuesday earthquake that measured 7.0 on the Richter scale....

...."We ask ourselves how many people are trapped under the rubble. They told us that the cathedral collapsed, as also the national palace and the five-story U.N. building."
The missionary news agency reported that Father Le Beller had "difficulty continuing," as he spoke about the destruction of the Caritas Center that he personally founded for working with street children.

".....The cathedral, the archbishopric, all the important churches and all the seminaries [buildings] have been reduced to rubble," he said.
Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot of the Port-au-Prince Archdiocese was among those killed in the collapse.
The nuncio added that many seminarians and priests also died under the rubble, though the cathedral's parish priest was able to escape.
He continued, "In the morning I went to express my condolences and solidarity to the president, who was saved because he was outside the palace with his family," though the national palace and his private home were destroyed.
The prelate said that "the parliament with senators, the schools with children, the supermarkets, all have been reduced to rubble."
He continued, "The general headquarters of MINUSTAH -- the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti -- has become a heap of cement and hundreds of people are trapped."
Trapped
Archbishop Auzas reported what he saw around the city: "I have found priests and nuns on the street, homeless. The rector of the seminary was saved, also the dean of studies, but many seminarians are trapped in the rubble. Everywhere one hears cries under the rubble."
He added that the Institute of Studies for Men and Women Religious collapsed with several people inside who were attending a conference.
Despite all of this destruction, the prelate said, "the nunciature resisted." He added that "there are no wounded but we are in shock."
The nuncio continued: "Many things were broken, including the tabernacle, but we have been lucky, all things considered. Many relatives of the staff have died and their homes have been destroyed.
"All are asking for help. Soon we will have water and food problems. We cannot go in or stay a long while in the house because the earth continues to shake, so we are camping in the garden."

Certain facts are known through the media (loss of life, homes, etc). More specifically for us, it was the apostolic nuncio in Santo Domingo who had the first contact via e-mail with Archbishop Bernardito Auza, apostolic nuncio in Haiti. Archbishop Auza is informing us about the losses to the Church, both in terms of life and structural damage. The archbishop of Port-au-Prince, Joseph Serge-Miot, whom he described as "good" and "always smiling," was killed as he was thrown from his balcony by the force of the earthquake. Other priests, religious and at least nine seminarians have been buried under the rubble. The cathedral, chancery, and all of the parish churches have been destroyed. .....
