Israel beckons tourists to Virgin Mary sites

JERUSALEM – Israel is inviting tourists to retrace the footsteps of the Virgin Mary, officials said Tuesday, in the latest campaign to bring Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land.
A new itinerary developed by the Tourism Ministry helps tour operators plan pilgrimages to sites where the mother of Jesus Christ lived and traveled. They include her birthplace near Nazareth in northern Israel, as well as Mary's Spring and the Tomb of the Virgin near Jerusalem.
Tourism officials said Israel has long facilitated pilgrimages for Christians to travel in Jesus' footsteps — spanning from the sites of his crucifixion and resurrection in Jerusalem to the Sea of Galilee, where he is said to have walked on water. Working with Palestinians, Israel also facilitates visits to Bethlehem, the West Bank village of Jesus' birth.
The Virgin Mary itinerary includes holy sites in the West Bank as well, including Bethlehem. Tourism officials said they work closely with the Palestinian on tourism matters, though this itinerary was not specifically coordinated with the Palestinians.
In 2010, 69 percent of Israel's almost 3.5 million tourists were Christians — mostly Catholics. Now Israel is encouraging return visits by those who have already made their first pilgrimage.
Friar Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Roman Catholic Church's custodian of the Holy Land, said that for the faithful, being able to touch and see biblical sites firsthand is a transformative experience.
"For us Christians, the Holy Land is the physical connection with the life of Jesus," he said. "But we cannot talk about the life of Jesus without talking about his mother, the Holy Virgin."
At the Church of the Visitation in Ein Karem Tuesday, beneath a large mosaic of Mary riding a donkey, tour guide Ein Mor Pnina told visitors they were standing at the site where a pregnant Mary is said to have visited her cousin, Elizabeth.
"We can see all the history of the Holy Land in this monastery," she said before leading visitors into the church's crypt, where painted scenes of Mary and other biblical figures fill every wall.
Lina Haddad, who directs Israel's marketing of religious tourism, said the full-color booklet outlining the Virgin Mary itinerary, released Tuesday in English, will be translated into Spanish, French, Italian, Polish and Portuguese.
Tourism professionals said Christian pilgrimages help Israel both economically and politically, because visitors tend to become supporters of Israel afterward.
Creating new travel products and marketing them specifically to Christians is the surest way to achieve that, said Elisa Leopold Moed, a Jew who founded Travelujah, a social network that promotes Christian tourism to Israel.
"The Christians feel passionate" about the sites so central to their faith, Moed said. "It's burning inside of them."

Never in our history has Congress failed to increase the debt limit when necessary. Failure to raise the limit would precipitate a default by the United States. Default would effectively impose a significant and long-lasting tax on all Americans and all American businesses and could lead to the loss of millions of American jobs. Even a very short-term or limited default would have catastrophic economic consequences that would last for decades. Failure to increase the limit would be deeply irresponsible. For these reasons, I am requesting that Congress act to increase the limit early this year, well before the threat of default becomes imminent.

Treasury would prefer not to have to engage again in any of these extraordinary measures [suspension of the issuance of certain types of government debt and government investment vehicles]. If we are forced to do so again, these measures could delay the date by which the limit is reached by several weeks. Once these steps have been taken, no remaining legal and prudent measures would be available to create additional headroom under the debt limit, and the United States would begin to default on its obligations.

The Treasury Secretary of The United States of America just said that if we don’t get another $1 trillion or so dollars by March of this year then this country will begin to default on its debt obligations. These remarks are extremely serious and should be understood for what they are.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner warned lawmakers Thursday that the national debt could hit the legal limit on federal borrowing as soon as March 31, and he urged them to act quickly to avoid a government default that would spark "catastrophic economic consequences that would last for decades."
In a letter sent to every member of Congress, Geithner said the national debt now stands at $13.95 trillion - $335 billion short of the current limit on borrowing that Congress set last year. Unless Congress acts to raise the limit, the letter says, the United States will default on its debt, a calamity that would be unprecedented and that could destroy "millions of American jobs," spike interest rates, hurt the dollar and halt federal payments to millions of retirees, veterans and active U.S. troops.
"For these reasons," Geithner wrote, "any default on the legal debt obligations of the United States is unthinkable and must be avoided."
The letter sets the stage for a showdown with congressional Republicans, who are threatening to block a debt limit increase unless it is paired with deep spending cuts and budget reforms that limit future spending. Even some Democrats have said they would be reluctant to raise the limit above $14.3 trillion without a plan for reducing the budget deficits that force the nation to borrow.
"The American people will not stand for such an increase unless it is accompanied by meaningful action by the president and Congress to cut spending and end the job-killing spending binge in Washington," House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) said in a statement. "While America cannot default on its debt, we also cannot continue to borrow recklessly, dig ourselves deeper into this hole and mortgage the future of our children and grandchildren. Spending cuts - and reforming a broken budget process - are top priorities for the American people and for the new majority in the House this year, and it is essential that the president and Democrats in Congress work with us in that effort."

A judge has delayed the trial of former Texas billionaire and financier R. Allen Stanford, who is accused of bilking investors out of $7 billion in a Ponzi scheme. U.S. District Judge David Hittner determined that Stanford is not mentally competent to go forward with his case. The financier's trial had been set to begin Jan. 24. The judge agreed on Thursday to delay the start of the trial until Stanford can be treated for medical problems affecting his competency. The judge did not say how long the delay could last. Hittner ruled after a daylong hearing during which three psychiatrists testified that Stanford is not competent because of medical issues including a brain injury he suffered during a jail fight in September 2009. 

We need to follow the Monsanto story closely: it appears the sterility gene from corn gets transmitted to mammals; and that would include YOU!

It appears that the gene for sterility can be conveyed downstream to whoever ingests it. Scary stuff! Specially considering the ongoing population reduction battle being waged. Time to reexamine those issues, wouldn't you say?

Posted this mainly for the Monsanto story, the rest is so-so.

PS: This past summer by accident I planted a corn seed in my garden; I watched the plant grow and grow, larger and larger, and was anticipating one nice, fat ear of corn. But surprise, surprise, the seed must have been sterile, because instead of one fat ear of corn, I got an utterly useless bouquet of dangling pretties.

So I am wondering: is GM corn being fed to us in Israel? It would appear so. Not something to be proud of, nor to eat if we can avoid it. Further investigation necessary, unless somebody has the answer already.
