IDF Opens Hevron-Kiryat Arba Linkage to PA Traffic

(IsraelNN.com) The Tzir Tzion connection between Kiryat Arba and the Jewish sections of Hevron was opened to Palestinian Authority Arab vehicle traffic by the IDF on Sunday, according to an army spokesman quoted by Ynet . The roadway linkage was the site of several terrorist attacks in the past.
The IDF said that it was taking appropriate security measures in tandem with the opening. The Jewish communities of Hevron cited safety concerns in voicing their strong opposition to the move.
Police in manhunt for Tel Aviv gay club shooter

Hundreds of police officers scoured the streets of Tel Aviv on Sunday in a manhunt for a gunman who shot and killed two people at a youth club in the worst ever attack on homosexuals in Israel.
The Tel Aviv shooting shocked the Mediterranean city, which prides itself on its live-and-let-live attitude and boasts a thriving gay community. The brazen attack drew condemnations from the city's mayor, from Cabinet ministers, the country's chief rabbis and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"We'll bring him to justice and exercise the full extent of the law against him," Netanyahu said of the killer, speaking at the Israeli Cabinet's weekly meeting.
A masked man entered a center for gay teens in downtown Tel Aviv late Saturday, pulled out a pistol and shot in all directions, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said. The shooter then holstered his pistol and fled the scene on foot into the busy streets of Tel Aviv, Rosenfeld said.
The dead were identified as a 26-year-old man who was a counselor at the youth center, and a 17-year-old girl. Eleven people were wounded, four in serious condition.
"I took cover with someone under a table, and he kept firing," 16-year-old Or Gil, who was shot twice in the legs, recounted in news footage aired on the YNet news Web site.
"When I got up it was horrifying, I just saw blood," he said. Photographs of the scene showed bodies lying near a billiard table and a smear of blood on the white-tile floor.
Nitzan Horowitz, Israel's only openly gay lawmaker, called the attack a "hate crime."
"This is the worst attack ever against the gay community in Israel," he said. "This act was a blind attack against innocent youths, and I expect the authorities to exercise all means in apprehending the shooter."
Police slapped a gag order on the case, saying publication of details could compromise the investigation.
Mike Hamel, a gay rights activist whose organization runs the youth club, said the center served as a safe place where gay teens - many of whom still conceal their sexual identity - could meet with counselors and other teenagers. He blamed religious incitement against homosexuals for the attack.
"Beyond the pain, the frustration and the anger, we are facing a situation in which the incitement to hate creates an environment that allows this to happen," Hamel said.
Israel's gays and lesbians typically enjoy freedoms similar to those of gays in European countries. Gay soldiers serve openly in the military, and openly gay musicians and actors are among the country's most popular. Tel Aviv holds a festive annual gay parade, rainbow flags are often seen flying from apartment windows and there is a city-funded open house for the community.
However, ultra-Orthodox Jewish leaders often incite against gays, especially in conservative Jerusalem, where there have been clashes between religious and gay activists. In 2005, an ultra-Orthodox protester stabbed three marchers at a Jerusalem gay parade. Last year, a lawmaker from the ultra-Orthodox Shas party suggested in parliament that earthquakes were divine punishment for homosexual activity.
Shas, whose members have been among the most frequent critics of gays, issued a statement condemning Saturday's attack.
Tel Aviv's mayor, Ron Huldai, pledged that Tel Aviv would continue to maintain its pluralistic nature, and opposition leader Tzipi Livni expressed shock and sorrow, saying the shooting should "awaken society to rid itself of prejudice." President Shimon Peres also condemned what he called a "despicable murder" which "a cultured and enlightened people cannot accept."
Thousands took to the street in an impromptu march after Saturday night's attack to mourn for the victims and call for tolerance. Other demonstrations were planned Sunday in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and other Israeli cities.
The covers of Sunday's newspapers all featured photos of the bloodstained floors of the youth club and headlines such as "Massacre of the Proud Youth" and "Terror Against the Proud Community." Gay celebrities penned guest columns.
The youth at the club "go there because it is a refuge of sorts for them," songwriter and gay activist Rona Keinan wrote in the daily Yediot Ahronot. "The very thought that a person might enter that protected space and simply open fire at them is shocking. I just want to cry."

Israel to Ban Foreign-Funded NGOs?

(IsraelNN.com) Officials in the Prime Minister's Office expressed anger last week over foreign funding of Israel-based political NGOs, including the leftist group Breaking the Silence, which recently released several highly-publicized anonymous second-hand reports of IDF crimes in Gaza. Now, according to the Jerusalem Post, the government is weighing a ban on foreign funding for such groups.
Several NGOs that appear to be political in nature, such as Peace Now, Ir Amim, B'Tselem, Rabbis for Human Rights and the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, are heavily funded by European governments. The NGOs in question are opposed to Israel's presence in Judea, Samaria, and areas of Jerusalem claimed by the Palestinian Authority, and are often harshly critical of the IDF, the government, and Jews living in Judea an Samaria.
INFLUENZA is one of the biggest causes of school absenteeism. And as teachers and principals often say, a child who isn't in class cannot learn. But absenteeism is not the only reason to fear the new H1N1 flu virus spreading through schools this fall.
When children catch the flu they readily transmit it to their families and communities — perhaps because they aren't always vigilant about covering their noses and mouths when coughing or sneezing.
As a group, children are two to three times more likely than adults to be infected by any flu virus each year. They harbor more live viruses in their respiratory secretions than adults do and for twice as long. It's no wonder that schools are a perfect environment for a virus to spread, with 20 to 30 children in a classroom, and hundreds gathered in a cafeteria, gym or auditorium, touching and sneezing on one another.
Schools can take several measures to help keep flu from spreading: Hand-washing and coughing or sneezing into the arm or a tissue should be stressed. Hand-sanitizing gel dispensers should be available throughout schools for both staff members and students. Parents should be instructed to monitor their child for flu symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, aches, fatigue, and even vomiting or diarrhea, and if they are present, keep the child home from school for 7 to 10 days.
And in cases of a widespread outbreak — if, for instance, there are confirmed cases of H1N1 flu in half the regions of a state — it may be wise to close schools for a few weeks until most of the children have recovered.
To make sure that such measures are taken in all schools, every county should create an influenza action team run by the local health department and including parents and school administrators. (The team should also include local doctors and nurses, government officials and the news media.)
In addition to seeing that schools work on prevention, these teams should monitor influenza activity in the community, especially absenteeism in schools, and remain alert to new information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Since the novel H1N1 virus infection so far appears to be about as severe as ordinary seasonal flu, parents should seek a doctor's help if the child seems to have a severe case or is at high risk for complications.
If an effective vaccine can be developed by early fall, it will also be a good idea to inoculate the students. The C.D.C. now recommends that virtually all children age 6 months or older receive an influenza vaccine. School-based vaccination programs may be a good idea, making it possible to inoculate large numbers of schoolchildren quickly with an H1N1 vaccine that's separate from the seasonal flu shot. To make sure the community is prepared for such a program, school officials should encourage parents to talk with their children's doctors about the best way to get their children vaccinated.
The silver lining in this approaching storm may be that multiple agencies will learn to work together to protect communities from pandemic flu.

Am Yisrael wants the Temple rebuilt!
A survey conducted by the Panels Insitute revealed that 64 % of the Israeli public , and half of secular Israelis, want the Temple rebuilt. 97% of respondents know that the Temple was destroyed on Tisha B'Av ( Ninth of Av).
The survey's second question queried the public’s desire to rebuild the Temple. Sixty-four percent responded favorably and 36 percent said no. Analysis of the answers revealed that not only hareidi-religious and other religious Jews want to rebuild the Temple, (100 percent and 97 percent respectively), but also the traditional public (91 percent) and many secular Jews (47 percent) do as well.
