1.Psychiatrist Debunks Claims that Mom Suffers from Munchausen

(Israelnationalnews.com) Hareidi-religious protests in Jerusalem that prompted an inquiry in the arrest of a mother alleged of child abuse got results: A Jerusalem psychiatrist debunked a hospital's claim that a mother accused of starving her child is suffering from a mental illness and dangerous to her child. The news throws a monkey wrench in an episode that was accompanied by violent protests, burning trash and growing suspicions of the hareidi-religious public towards medical and government agencies.
A Jerusalem district psychiatrist concluded that the Jerusalem mother suspected of starving her son is fit to stand trial and doesn't suffer from Munchausen by Proxy syndrome, Voice of Israel government radio reported. Dr. Yaakov Weil, who examined the mother, also determined that the mother isn't dangerous to her child. Officials of the hareidi-religious Eida Hareidit organization were satisfied by the results and said that what now remains for the mother is to prove her innocence in court.
The Jerusalem Magistrates Court will deliberate 11:30 a.m. Thursday regarding the psychiatrist evaluation and discuss whether to extend the mother's house arrest. They will hear the psychiatrist's and police opinion before deciding the next step.
The psychiatric report criticized a Hadassah hospital pediatrician's decision to diagnose the mother as suffering from a mental illness. "How is it possible that a pediatrician diagnosed the mother with Munchausen, as opposed to a psychiatrist? She hasn't even undergone a psychiatric exam at the hospital," the report stated.
Sources from the Hadassah Medical Center stated that they would only respond to the psychiatric evaluation after they review it.
About a hundred hareidi-religious demonstrators protested in front of the home of Dr. Yair Birenbaum, the director of Hadassah, demanding to know why the hospital suspected the mother might be starving her child.
Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman told Voice of Israel government radio that there isn't justification for the mother's house arrest. He also affirmed that the Health Ministry will investigate any claims that it receives of any failure of the health system, including allegations against Hadassah Medical Center.
Several days ago, Litzman posted 200,000 shekels ($50,000) bail on the mother's behalf to guarantee that the mother would be evaluated by a Jerusalem district psychiatrist. Litzman was relieved when the expectant mother showed up for her court arraignment – a day late – due to her not feeling well.
The mother, a hareidi-religious woman, was arrested after hospital officials saw her, on a hidden camera, remove a feeding tube from her severely underweight three-year-old child. She claims that she was trying to feed her son solids. Family members accuse Jerusalem's Hadassah Medical Center of framing the mother to cover-up medical malpractice of a child who has been under their care for the last two years, without his condition improving. Hospital officials responded that the child began gaining weight since the mother's arrest prevented her from harming her son.
The mother's subsequent arrest last week prompted violent demonstrations in hareidi-religious neighborhoods of Jerusalem. The mother was placed under house arrest since Friday on condition that she would agree to undergo psychiatric examinations to rule-out Munchausen on Proxy syndrome, a mental illness in which a person causes harm to a family member in order to gain attention.
2.(IsraelNN.com) The hareidi woman accused of starving her three-year-old son is scheduled to appear before the Jerusalem Magistrates Court on Friday to determine whether her house arrest will be at home or whether she will continue to stay at the home of Rabbi Avraham Freilich.
During a hearing on Thursday, the district mental health officer prevented the woman from going home when he disagreed with the psychiatrist who carried out mental evaluations of the mother and said the woman was healthy and not a risk to her children.
3.from Ynet: see how the media have already indicted the mother and decided that she did, indeed, starve her child. It IS a blood libel against the mother, accusing her in essence of attempted murder of her child, without knowing the details of the case.
"Starving mother" gets house arrest
Jerusalem Magistrate's Court places woman suspected of starving toddler son under house arrest, allows her to see her children – excluding three-year-old one who is still hospitalized. District Court judge denies State's appeal
Efrat Weiss
Jerusalem Magistrate's Court Judge Shulamit Dotan placed the mother suspected of starving her son under house arrest and ruled that she can see her children.
However, the judge did not allow the mother to see the son she is suspected of starving, who is currently hospitalized, until the end of her remand on August 5.
It was also ruled that the child may be transferred from Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital to another institution.
The judge ruled that "there is enough evidence for an indictment" and said that "with regards to the child, the evidence strongly contradicts the psychiatrist Dr. Yakov Weil's evaluation."
The judge also decided to allow the child to be transferred from Hadassah to another institution, stating that despite the psychiatrist's evaluation and "in light of the evidence it seems there are grounds that the defendant may pose a danger to the child."
After viewing the material and watching footage filmed in the hospital of the mother disconnecting tubes from her child, the judge said, "The investigative material indicates that certain offences may have also been carried out against other children in the family."
But the judge criticized the police, saying they "should have carried out a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the suspicions of acts being carried out against other children in the family".
She added, "It seems to me, from reading the material, that what was done in the matter was very superficial and does not constitute a sufficient basis to order her detainment for the duration of the investigation.
"A statement here and a statement there, in a general and meaningless way without things being clarified and backed with other evidence that should be found in the relevant places, is insufficient at the point where the defendant was already subject to a prolonged arrest and released under limited conditions some eight days ago."
The verdict was given behind closed doors, and after leaving the courtroom, the mother's attorney, David Halevy said it was yet to be decided whether the child will be transferred to the care of a family member or another medical center.
He said the judge criticized the police and prosecution for not accepting psychiatrist Yakov Weil's report.
A few hours later, District Court Judge Rafi Carmel denied the State's appeal against the decision to put the woman under house arrest. According to the judge, the case "has gone out of proportions" and must be returned to the right proportions.
Justice Carmel told the State Prosecutor's Office representative, Attorney Maayan Rimon, "Assuming that what we have seen on the child is the mother's work. I don't see the danger for the other children when she is accompanied by an adult. What will she do? Drown the children in the bathtub?"
On, Thursday, as the Jerusalem district psychiatrist rejected the psychiatric evaluation filed with the capital's Magistrate's Court by Dr. Yaakov Weil, the psychiatrist appointed to the case, as "inconclusive."
The district psychiatrist informed the court that while he agreed with Weil's conclusion that the woman did not suffer from Münchausen Syndrome by proxy, he did not share Weil's determination as to how dangerous the woman may be to her surroundings.
According to the mother's attorney, Dotan did not condition her return home with her children on an investigation by the child services.
The father has already committed to taking the children to a child investigator three times in the past, but has failed to do so despite claims made by the police and prosecution that they had evidence that two other children may have also suffered abuse.
Dudi Zilbershlag, a friend of the family said, "The fact that the mother will be able to see her children is already a great achievement. We hope this happens before Shabbat. The prosecution made a serious mistake yesterday when it criticized the psychiatrist's report."
4.Litzman backs hospital in 'abusive mother' affair
Following Jerusalem riots, deputy health minister visits Hadassah Ein Kerem medical center, where child whose mother is suspected of starving him is hospitalized. Hospital's director-general criticizes silence in light of attacks on doctors
Ronen Medzini
Deputy Health Minister Yakov Litzman visited the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem on Thursday morning, following riots in Jerusalem over the arrest of a woman suspected of starving her toddler son. The child is still hospitalized.
At the start of the visit, the hospital's Director-General Shlomo Mor Yosef asked Litzman why he had avoided condemning the ultra-Orthodox community's attacks on the hospital.
"There is no reason to refer to the deputy director-general with these names – Mengele, a filthy traitor," Mor Yosef told Litzman. "The hospital is a place of grace, not of war… No one speaks and not one utters anything. Is this what the State of Israel has to say to its doctors?"
Litzman responded, "I give all the backing needed to Hadassah and its doctors." He added that pashkavilim (wall posters) has been published against him too and that he has been attacked by many.
The deputy minister, who paid NIS 200,000 (about $51,645) in bail in order to allow the mother to be released and put under house arrest, recently infuriated the medical system due to his failure to support the hospital, after declaring that he plans to look into its conduct in terms of the treatment of the child.
A senior health official criticized Litzman, whose behavior he said "went beyond any standard." According to the source, "Litzman should be backing the health system and its doctors, rather than slamming the system before looking into things.
"The health system expects the deputy minister to fully back the system, especially when looking at the results and the child's medical condition. The deputy minister abandoned the doctors in favor of the community he belongs to."
The hospital and its management have been dealing in the past two weeks with a harsh attack by haredi elements raising claims against the way the toddler is being treated.
"This is an unbridled attack on one of the best hospitals in the country," said Dr. Yoram Blachar, head of the Israeli Medical Association. "Hurting the Hadassah hospital is like hurting the entire Israeli society.

My questions:
Why does the hospital expect of the deputy health minister that he will back the health system and its doctors, rather than seeking justice? What is this expectation by the establishment that somehow they are immune to justified criticism? Thank G-d we now have a G-d fearing deputy health minister who cares for the welfare of the patients, and not only of the doctors.
It seems that MK Litzman understands the TRUE MEANING OF A HEALTH SYSTEM:
HEALTH IS NOT ABOUT DOCTORS.
HEALTH IS ABOUT THE PATIENTS, FIRST AND FOREMOST.
DOCTORS HAVE A SHLICHUT, A MISSION, WHICH THEY HAVE TO FULFILL TO THE BEST OF THEIR ABILITIES;
THEY ARE NOT A PRIVILEGED ENTITY, LIKE THE 18 RULING FAMILIES OF THE COUNTRY, OR LIKE ANY FASCISTIC SYSTEM, IMMUNE TO CRITICISM.
BARUCH HASHEM. THE HEALTH SYSTEM NEEDS A PERSON LIKE MK LITZMAN, TO PUT DOCTORS IN THEIR PROPER PLACE.
AND I AM SPEAKING AS A DOCTOR.
I BELIEVE DOCTORS SHOULD BE WELL COMPENSATED FOR THE EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND SELF-SACRIFICING WORK THEY DO, SHOULD BE RESPECTED AND APPRECIATED FOR THEIR GREAT CONTRIBUTION TO HUMANITY.
BUT WHEN THEY MAKE MISTAKES, THOSE MISTAKES SHOULD NOT BE BRUSHED OVER AND BURIED, TO MAKE IT APPEAR AS THOUGH NOTHING HAS HAPPENED.
I HAVE SEEN THIS SAME BEHAVIOR IN THE HEALTH ESTABLISHMENT( IN THE UNITED STATES) MANY TIMES, THIS IS NOTHING NEW; THERE IS AN" OL'BOY'S CLUB" IN MEDICINE, WITH ONE HAND PROTECTING THE OTHER; MISTAKES ARE COVERED UP AND BURIED BY 'THE SYSTEM'. VERY NICE, BUT NOT AT THE EXPENSE OF VULNERABLE PATIENTS, MOTHERS, BABIES, ETC!
AND I AM ALSO ASKING: WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE STATE IN THIS AFFAIR? WHY IS THE STATE SO INTERESTED IN THE HOSPITAL BEING FOUND INNOCENT AND THE MOTHER GUILTY? ARE WE DEALING WITH PREJUDICE AGAINST THE RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY, OR IS IS A MATTER OF SHARED INTERESTS, OL'BOY'S CLUB AGAIN, WITH THE SAME PEOPLE, SAME FAMILIES, SHARING INTERESTS, FRIENDSHIPS, ETC., BETWEEN THE MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT AND THE POLITICAL ECHELON?
IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE STATE SHOULD HAVE A NEUTRAL ATTITUDE IN THIS SITUATION.
WHY IS IT BEING PARTIAL, PREJUDICED, AND WHY HAS IT ALREADY INDICTED THE MOTHER, EVEN BEFORE THE EVIDENCE HAS BEEN FULLY COLLECTED?
IS IT ONLY ANTI-HAREDI SENTIMENT, OR ARE WE DEALING WITH BRIBERY, BY ANY CHANCE? WHAT IS GOING ON???
MY LAST QUESTION IS;
WHAT IS THE LEGAL STATUS OF THE CHILD VS HIS MOTHER AT THIS TIME? WHO IS THE LEGAL GUARDIAN OF THE CHILD? WHO WILL HAVE ACCESS TO HIS MEDICAL RECORDS? THAT IS A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION. THE FAMILY SHOULD HAVE UNFETTERED ACCESS TO THE CHILD'S RECORDS, WHETHER THE HOSPITAL LIKES IT OR NOT, SO AS TO ESTABLISH WHAT REALLY TRANSPIRED IN THE HOSPITAL.
IT IS CLEAR, HOWEVER, THAT IF IT TURNS OUT THAT THE MOTHER DID, IN FACT, HARM HER CHILD, SHE SHOULD BE HELD FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOR HER ACTIONS. THESE THINGS DO HAPPEN, AND IT IS THE OBLIGATION OF DOCTORS TO REPORT CHILD ABUSE WHEN IT OCCURS. THIS IS A VERY DIFFICULT DECISION TO MAKE, AS THE DOCTOR KNOWS THAT THERE IS A CHANCE THE CHILD MIGHT BE TAKEN AWAY FROM HIS FAMILY.
THIS IS SOMETHING THAT SHOULD NOT BE DONE LIGHTLY, AND ONLY IF THERE IS IRREFUTABLE EVIDENCE THAT THE CHILD'S WELFARE IS IN DANGER.
NOWADAYS, CHILDREN SEEM TO OFTEN BE TAKEN AWAY FROM THEIR PARENTS FOR RATHER FLIMSY REASONS. IT IS NOT GOOD.

Update:
Sunday, July 26th:
(IsraelNN.com) The toddler, whose condition resulted in the arrest of his mother and violence in Jerusalem's hareidi-religious community, was transferred Sunday from Hadassah Ein-Kerem Hospital to another medical institution in the country, according Channel 2 television. Under a gag order, the the name of the facility was not published. Pictures taken as he left Hadassah showed him still to be thin but to have gained weight.
The transfer of the boy was allowed following a custody hearing on Friday, when his mother was allowed to continue her house arrest at home after starting it at the home of a rabbi. A court-appointed psychiatrist said the woman was mentally healthy and not a risk to her children, but she was banned from seeing the boy for the time being.
The mother was arrested after she was caught on security cameras removing a feeding tube from the boy. She claimed she wanted to give him solid food.
