This is probably one of the most outrageous parts of the visit so far: the symbolism of the pope planting an olive tree in the Israeli President's garden, these Israeli girls dressed like first communiants... and the 7 species; TOTAL Chillul Hashem!

During the Pope's visit to Israel, he will plant an olive tree in the garden of the President's House, at the heart of Israel's "Olive Tree Trail," a route stretching from the Galilee to the Negev dedicated on October 30, 2008.

Israel's Peres gives pope tiniest Bible

11 May 2009, 1944 hrs IST, AFP

JERUSALEM: Pope Benedict XVI received a tiny Bible the size of a grain of sand, a specially bred strain of wheat and fruit from the Holy Land on the first day of his visit to Israel on Monday.

President Shimon Peres presented the pope with an Old Testament engraved on a minuscule chip by scientists at Technion, Israel's Institute of Technology.

The Bible is in a glass case that also features the first 13 verses of the Book of Genesis magnified 10,000 times to be readable.

Three schoolchildren -- a Muslim, a Jew and a Christian -- also presented the pontiff with an ear of a new hybrid strain of wheat named "Benedictus XVI" in honour of his trip.

Peres's office said that the wheat signified the five loaves with which, according to Christian tradition, Jesus fed a multitude.

Also among the gifts presented by the children were the fruit and grain -- wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives and dates -- known in Judaism as the "seven species" and mentioned in the Old Testament as produce of the Holy Land.

The pope gave Peres a painting of a menorah, a Jewish candelabra.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat gave the pope an ancient map showing the Holy City at the centre of the world.
