Call for Pope to Resign over Holocaust Denier

(IsraelNN.com) Criticism of the Pope's decision to repeal the excommunication of British Bishop Richard Williamson, a Holocaust denier, increased on Monday. One Catholic theologian has called on the Holy See to step down.

"If the pope wants to do some good for the Church, he should leave his job," liberal Catholic theologian Hermann Haering told Tageszeitung, a German daily.

Pope Benedict XVI 's decision to cancel the excommunication of four bishops consecrated in 1988 created international tumult. Williamson, who is on record denying that Jews were gassed during the Holocaust, has been criticized by both Jews and Catholics.
