Report: More than 20% of Ex-Gaza Jews face Hunger
(IsraelNN.com) According to groups working with Jewish families that were expelled from Gaza in 2005, more than 20 percent of Gaza expellees are living in poverty so severe that they would face hunger without donations. Many worked as farmers in Gaza and have been unable to find employment since the expulsion, while others lost a spouse or suffered illness in the family, the groups said.
Officials in the regional welfare office said that the number of families in need of aid has grown as time goes on and they are not provided with permanent housing. While families received some compensation money from the government, many were forced to use the money to pay for basic expenses and for the mortgages on their destroyed homes in Gaza. Welfare officials said they were aware of the problems facing the expellee families, and were working with the Disengagement Authority to find solutions.
