Members of the IBVM (Loretto Sisters), conscious of the international and multicultural nature of our Institute, have made a commitment to focus on a number of issues in all ministries, institutions, projects and programs. These include:

  • promoting the dignity and liberation of all, especially women and children;
  • challenging unjust systems and structures;
  • standing with those on the edges of society;
  • promoting reverent care for the earth and all of creation.

These are goals which we as IBVM's share with the United Nations in its efforts to promote human rights, and sustainable development, and to bring about a world where justice will ensure human security and dignity for all.

In 2002 the international Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary was officially awarded NGO status at the United Nations.

What is an NGO?

The letters stand for "non-governmental organization". At the UN this refers to hundreds of not-for-profit voluntary citizens' groups that share its humanitarian goals and have official ties.

IBVM/RSCJ Partnership at the UN

Evanne Hunter IBVM and Cecile Meir RSCJ gave a presentation about the work of the UN and their activities as NGO representatives at the IBVM Provincials' meeting in Phoenix, Arizona in 2005. A partnership between the two NGOs, IBVM (Loretto Sisters) and RSCJ (Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), allows the representatives of the two congregations to work together out of a single office, collaborating and sharing resources. These representatives identify key issues of national and international concern from IBVM and RSCJ perspectives. Each day Evanne Hunter IBVM and Cecile Meijer RSCJ, meet to decide which of the many UN meetings and briefings they will attend. Working together they are able to cover a far greater range of issues and to bring the spirituality and charisms of the two congregations to bear on the global issues being addressed. Evanne and Cecile make the work of the UN better known to the members of their religious congregations, partners in ministry, schools, associates, family members and friends and bring the concerns of IBVM and RSCJ to the discussion whenever and wherever they can.
