India, Jihad's Permanent Battleground

India, Jihad's Permanent Battleground

Teams of heavily armed terrorists carried out seven coordinated attacks in India's financial capital "Mumbai" (Bombay) on Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning. Over 160 people were reported killed by Friday morning and over 327 wounded, with the final toll likely to rise once the ongoing hostage crisis is ended. Similar attacks by Islamic terrorists occur with grim regularity in India (see Timetable at the end). The disputed province of Kashmir notwithstanding, militant Islam sees the second most populous country in the world as a piece of "unfinished business;" having been ruled by Muslims once, it cannot legitimately revert to Dar al-Harb. (Non-islamic world.)

The attacks represent a massive intelligence failure on part of the government in New Delhi. Even India's business capital is now seen as a soft target for Jihadist terror, yet the ruling Congress Party continues its old habit of minority appeasement and automatic insistence that the problem is confined to an unrepresentative extremist fringe aided from abroad (i.e. Pakistan). This attitude indicates common ideological roots of India's political and media elite and its Western role model. Both are supine, secularist and leftist to boot.

Now that the jihadists have targeted two luxury hotels and a top-tier restaurant frequented by visiting foreigners, now that they have brought their holy war to India's upper crust and their Western business partners, the country's elite class should wake up to the fact that India has a muslim problem. That problem is fundamentally the same in each and every country in the world with a substantial muslim minority.

It would be there even if the government in Islamabad and its semi-rogue agencies like the ISI were to terminate all support for Islamic terrorist groups active across the Subcontinent (which will never happen, of course). The attacks remind us that global jihad has India in its sights, no less firmly today than in the early centuries of the expansion of Islam's bloody borders.

Prior to the muslim invasions which started in the 8th century India was one of the world's great civilizations. It matched its contemporaries in the realms of philosophy, mathematics, and natural science. It was a richly imaginative culture, one of the half-dozen most advanced civilizations of all time. Its sculptures were vigorous and sensual, its architecture ornate and spellbinding. [India, in fact, gave the world "Arabic" numbers, including the concept of zero, which is often erroneous attributed to the Arabs. -- Allan]

Muslim invaders began entering India in the early eighth century, on the orders of Hajjaj, the governor of Iraq. Starting in 712 C.E. the raiders, commanded by Muhammad Qasim, demolished temples, shattered sculptures, plundered palaces, killed vast numbers of men—it took them three days to slaughter the inhabitants of the port city of Debal—and carried off their women and children to slavery. After the initial wave of violence, however, Qasim tried to establish law and order in the newly conquered lands, and to that end he even allowed a degree of religious tolerance. Upon hearing of such practices, his superior, Hajjaj, wrote back:

You go on giving pardon to everybody, high or low, without any discretion between a friend and a foe. The great Allah says in the Kuran [47.4]: "O True believers, when you encounter the unbelievers, strike off their heads." The above command is a great command and must be respected and followed. You should not be so fond of showing mercy, as to nullify the virtue of the act. Henceforth, grant pardon to no one of the enemy and spare none of them, or else all will consider you a weak-minded man.

In a subsequent communication, Hajjaj reiterated that all able-bodied men were to be killed, and that their underage sons and daughters were to be enslaved. Qasim obeyed, and, on his arrival at the town of Brahminabad, massacred thousands of men.

Qasim's early exploits were continued in the early eleventh century, when Mahmud of Ghazni "passed through India like a whirlwind, destroying, pillaging, and massacring," zealously following the Kuranic injunctions to kill idolaters, whom he had vowed to chastise every year of his life. In the course of seventeen invasions, in the words of Alberuni, the scholar brought by Mahmud to India,

Mahmud utterly ruined the prosperity of the country and performed there wonderful exploits, by which the Hindus became like atoms of dust scattered in all directions, and like a tale of old in the mouth of the people. Their scattered remains cherish, of course, the most inveterate aversion toward all muslims.

In the aftermath of the invasion, in the ancient cities of Varanasi, Mathura, Ujjain, Maheshwar, Jwalamukhi, and Dwarka, not one temple survived whole and intact. In his The Story of Civilization, Will Durant lamented the results of what he termed "probably the bloodiest story in history." He called it

a discouraging tale, for its evident moral is that civilization is a precious good, whose delicate complex order and freedom can at any moment be overthrown by barbarians invading from without and multiplying from within…. [E]ternal vigilance is the price of civilization. A nation must love peace, but keep its powder dry.

Islamic invaders broke and burned everything beautiful they came across in Hindustan, displaying, as an Indian commentator put it, the resentment of the less developed warriors who felt intimidated in the encounter with a more refined culture. The muslim sultans built mosques at the sites of torn down temples, and countless Hindus were sold into slavery

As far as the invaders were concerned, Hindus were kafirs par excellence. They, and to a lesser extent the peaceful Buddhists, were not "of the book" — "protected," like Jews and Christians, provided they submit to dhimmitude – but at the receiving end of Muhammad's implacable injunction against pagans: "Kill those who join other gods with God wherever you may find them." (Kuran, 9:5-6)

The mountainous northwestern approaches to India are called Hindu Kush, "the Slaughter of the Hindu," a reminder of the days when Hindu slaves from Indian Subcontinent died in the harsh Afghan mountains while being transported to muslim courts of Central Asia. The slaughter in Somnath, the site of a celebrated Hindu temple, where 50,000 Hindus were slain on Mahmud's orders, set the tone for centuries.

The Buddhists were the next to be subjected to mass slaughter in 1193, when Muhammad Khilji also burned their famous library. By the end of the twelfth century, following the muslim conquest of their stronghold in Bihar, they were no longer a significant presence in India. The survivors retreated into Nepal and Tibet, or escaped to the south of the Subcontinent. The remnants of their culture lingered on even as far west as Turkestan. Left to the tender mercies of muslim conquerors and their heirs, they were systematically destroyed, sometimes—as was the case with the four giant statues of Buddha destroyed by the Taliban in Afghanistan in March 2001—as late as the first year of the third millennium.

That cultivated disposition and developed sensibility can go hand in hand with bigotry and cruelty is evidenced by the example of Firuz Shah, who became the ruler of northern India in 1351. This educated yet tyrannical muslim ruler once surprised a village where a Hindu religious festival was celebrated and ordered all present to be slain. He proudly related that, upon completing the slaughter, he destroyed the temples and in their place built mosques.

The Moghul emperor Akbar is remembered as tolerant, and only one major massacre was recorded during his long reign (1542–1605), when he ordered that about 30,000 captured Rajput Hindus be slain on February 24, 1568, after the battle for Chitod. But Akbar's acceptance of other religions and toleration of their public worship, his abolition of poll-tax on non-muslims, and his interest in other faiths were not a reflection of his Islamic spirit of tolerance. Quite the contrary, they indicated his propensity for free-thinking experimentation in the realm of religion that finally led him to complete apostasy. Its high points were the formal declaration of his own infallibility in all matters of religious doctrine, his promulgation of a new creed, and his adoption of Hindu and Zoroastrian festivals and practices.

Things were back to normal under Shah Jahan (1593–1666), the fifth Mogul Emperor and a grandson of Akbar the Great. Most Westerners remember him as the builder of Taj Mahal and do not know that he was a cruel warmonger who initiated 48 military campaigns against non-muslims in less than 30 years. Taking his cue from his Ottoman co-religionists, on coming to the throne in 1628 he killed all his male relations except one who escaped to Persia. During his reign, in Benares alone 76 Hindu temples were destroyed, and Christian churches at Agra and Lahore were demolished. At the end of the three-month siege of Hugh, a Portuguese enclave near Calcutta, he had 10,000 inhabitants "blown up with powder, drowned in water, or burnt by fire." More than 4,000 were taken captive to Agra where they were offered Islam or death. Most refused and were killed, except for the younger women who went to harems.

The massacres perpetrated by muslims in India are unparalleled in history. They are bigger in sheer numbers than the Holocaust, or the massacre of the Armenians by the Turks; more extensive even than the slaughter of the South American native populations by the invading Spanish and Portuguese.

Major recent attacks by Islamic terrorists in India:

March 12, 1993: 257 killed and more than 1,000 injured in 15 co-ordinated bomb attacks in Bombay. The blasts were orchestrated by an Islamic group headed by Dawood Ibrahim.

February 14, 1998: 46 people were killed and more than 200 injured in 13 car bombs in the city of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The attacks were blamed on the "Al Umma" Islamist group

October 1, 2001: Militants belonging to Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Kashmiri group, attacked Jammu and Kashmir Assembly complex in Srinagar, killing 35 people.

December 13, 2001: Attack on the Indian Parliament complex in New Delhi led to the killing of a dozen people and 18 injured. Four members of the Pakistan-based Islamist group Jaish-e-Mohammed were later convicted for their part in the plot

September 24, 2002: 31 people killed, 79 wounded at Akshardham temple in Gujarat

May 14, 2002: Islamic attackers killed more than 30 people in an Army camp near Jammu.

March 13, 2003: A bomb attack on a commuter train in Mumbai killed 11.

Aug. 25, 2003: Twin car bombings in Mumbai killed at least 52 people and injured 150. Indian authorities blamed the Kashmiri Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba

July 5, 2005: Attack on the Ram Janmabhoomi complex, the site of the destroyed Babri Mosque at Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh.

Oct. 29, 2005: Three explosions in busy shopping areas of south Delhi, two days before the Hindu festival of Diwali, killed 59 and injured 200. Islami Inqilabi Mahaz (Islamic Revolutionary Group) claimed responsibility, but authorities blamed Lashkar-e-Taiba.

March 7, 2006: A series of bombings in the holy city of Varanasi killed at least 28 and injured over a hundred. Indian investigators blamed Pakistan-based Islamic terrorists.

July 11, 2006: Seven bomb blasts on the Mumbai Suburban Railway killed over 200 people. Police blamed Lashkar-e-Taiba and Students Islamic Movement of India.

Sept. 8, 2006: At least 37 people were killed and 125 were injured in a series of explosions near a mosque in Malegaon, Maharashtra. The Islamic Movement of India claimed responsibility.

Aug. 25, 2007: Forty-two people killed and 50 injured in twin explosions at a crowded park in Hyderabad by Harkat-ul-Jehad-i-Islami (HuJI).

May 13, 2008: A series of six explosions in Jaipur killed 63 people and injured more than 150.

July 26, 2008: Serial explosions in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad killed 45 people and injured more than 150. The Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility.

Sept. 13, 2008: Five bomb blasts in New Delhi's popular shopping centers left 21 people dead and more than 100 injured. The Indian Mujahideen claimed responsibility.

And yet, The New York Times manages to produce a long reports on the attacks without mentioning the word "Muslim" or "Islam" even once!

This is NOT good news. The Vatican does not give something for nothing. The question is, what did Vatican chum and poodle Shimon Peres OFFER the Vatican, that the pope is suddenly even CONSIDERING visiting Israel??

ISRAEL - VATICAN
Benedict XVI will go to the Holy Land, possibly in May
The news has been released by Haaretz, and has been partly confirmed by the Israeli embassy to the Holy See, according to which "contacts" are underway for a "probable" visit of the pope next year.

Vatican City (AsiaNews) - It is likely that Benedict XVI's "desired" visit to the Holy Land will take place next May, during which the pope would visit both Israel and the Palestinian territories. The news, released by the newspaper Haaretz, has been only partially confirmed by the Israeli embassy to the Holy See, according to which "contacts are underway," but no dates have been established.

According to the Israeli newspaper, two weeks ago the nuncio Msgr. Antonio Franco said during a meeting with President Shimon Peres that the pope had decided to respond positively to the Israeli invitation to visit the country.

Since the visit has not been announced publicly, Haaretz continues, no preparations are underway, but the visit should take place in the second week of May.

Today, the Israeli embassy to the Holy See did not confirm the report in the newspaper, but said that there are "contacts between the two sides for a probable visit of the pope to Israel in 2009." "The details of the visit," the embassy continues, "have not yet been established or agreed, because this will take place through normal diplomatic channels. When the details are available, the parties will make this known through a joint press release."

Benedict XVI would be the third pope to go to the Holy Land, after the visits made in 1964 by Paul VI, and in 2000 by John Paul II.

Makes sense. Remember my post," Ehud Barak digs into public coffers to protect HIS KIBBUTZ BUDDIES,.. at the expense of Sderot.". Exact same story. We knew they were murderers, just didn't know all the details.

WHY ISRAEL WON'T ATTACK GAZA by Barry Chamish

In the late '90s, my work on the Rabin murder was a serious discussion topic in certain circles in Israel. One night I was at a very sabra party in Jerusalem when a man in his
thirties, well wined up, started a conversation with me. He claimed he worked for Intelligence and began with the execution of Adolph Eichmann. I will now quote him, though years have past and I'm really paraphrasing our conversation as best as memory permits.
"The older guys tell me the Eichmann execution was staged. They released ashes over the sea but they weren't his. His trial was a show and they kept him in a soundproof cage in case he said the wrong thing. The deal with him was to say the right things and they'd let him live."

There was enough logic in this that I published it as a rumor and I said so. The item was well rebutted, especially by a man famously known as Rabbi Pruz, of New Jersey, who hosted Eichmann's executioner at his synagogue.
However, the gentleman continued with a story he claimed to have partially witnessed that made perfect sense. It concerned Defense Minister Rabin in the late '80s:
"Rabin wanted Israel out of Lebanon but the Lebanese government was too unstable to cut an agreement with. The Shiites under Hizbullah were forcing Israel out with a very demoralizing murder campaign against the army and he had to deal with them to make any agreement stick. He insisted on a thin security zone along the border to prevent armed attacks on Israeli territory, but he was willing to pull out of the rest of the country. But his zone was no good against Katyusha rockets or artillery shells flying over it.
"He ended up with a secret deal with Hizbullah and pulled out of Lebanon in stages to test whether they'd keep it. Rabin realized he couldn't demand a full cessation of rocket or artillery attacks against Israel. But he could make them more acceptable if there was only one target, that being Kiryat Shmoneh."

To guide the unacquainted. You drive north from Tiberius, which is below sea level and climb a steep road. You look back and see the The Puddle Of Galilee and imagine the day you can finally walk across the whole lake, perhaps in five or six years. You now have reached the top of the the climb and you turn right. You pass the lovely Bohemian-style town of Rosh Pina, the famous archeological site of Tel Khatzor until you finally arrive at a town of 15,000, resting on a mountain, Kiryat Shmoneh.
"Kiryat Shmoneh is 90% Sephardi and 85% of them are Moroccan. To the establishment, that made the town expendable. As Defence Minister, Rabin's first duty was to protect the Ashkenazi Labor/left kibbutzim around Kiryat Shmoneh, and the Ashkenazi towns along the border. If you want to know the safest places to live in the country they are Metulla, Rosh HaNikra, or Naharia. Rabin's deal means Hizbullah won't touch them."
Call it a one, albeit likely, source, or call it rumor mongering, but this item spread throughout the country. I met the most unlikely people espousing it back to me. It caught on because it fits reality so perfectly. In fact, Hezbullah kept its word for almost 20 years until the second Lebanon War broke out in 2006.
That said, another rumor has arrived, from a likely source. Temporarily gone are the days when I could meet Israelis at parties or they could meet me anywhere with information. For the time being, I rely mostly on electricity for anyone to communicate with me. I quote:
"...Sharon thought the PA would keep the peace in Gaza after he evacuated the Jews from there. Hamas taking over ruined his plan. When they started pounding Israel with crude rockets, the defence establishment wanted to go back into Gaza and stop the attacks. But the Bush administration went ape. That would stop their hopeless peace plans. They ordered Sharon and his Defence Ministry never to threaten the Hamas government militarily. The Pentagon gave Israel tiny border areas where the military could operate and outright banned any operation that could change the status quo and stop the rockets.
"Sharon was forced to enter into secret negotiations with Hamas to hammer out the rules of engagement. His number one concern was Ashkelon. It is Israel's fourth largest city and nearly impossible for rockets to miss from Gaza. And more frightening, the city has a broad political and national population. Something had to be sacrificed to save Ashkelon, and that something was Sderot, a mostly Moroccan town.
"The way I've been hearing it, Israel agreed not to fight a war in Gaza that would end in a regime change. Hamas could shoot as many rockets as it wanted, on condition that they miss their targets. In short, the deal was don't mass kill Jews and we'll keep you in power. Most rockets would be aimed at Sderot, or the desert. It was permitted to do damage there. But Ashkelon, and especially its power station, were to remain no-hit zones. In return, Israel offered an insurance policy. It will not prepare its people for a war against Gaza by refitting public or school bomb shelters, distribute gas masks and the like. Israel is being held captive by Hamas and the Americans.
"Hamas broke the deal once last May when Bush was in Jerusalem. They slammed a Katyusha into a shopping mall, maiming over a dozen. But otherwise, in a city as large as Ashkelon, the rockets always find 'open areas'
to land in. If Hamas wanted to, it could aim at crowded football games, fairs, gatherings, just name wherever people gather. And if Israel wanted to, it could pound Gaza militarily and oust Hamas. But the way I've been told, there's a deal floating out there and neither side will break it."

More news but I can name the sources:

The fiesty Jerusalemite, Tova Rubin met with a sales rep from the Steimatzky book chain and convinced her to sell a selection of my books in Hebrew and English. She called to tell me that the rep informed her that all the books had been sold in a week. Tova added, "The buyer said he was your publisher."  Thank you, Tova. There is no such publisher and why would he need to buy the books he published?
It's nice to be remembered by the Shabak for my good work.
The next day, my Jerusalem buddy of twenty years, Gemma Blech came to visit me. We had a fine visit and I arranged to have her interviewed on the Stan Monteith and Bill Deagle radio shows.
Gemma is the photographer for the Women in Green and for my book Bye Bye Gaza. http://www.lulu.com/content/575116  She was deeply upset by the provocateurs who had all but wrecked the protest movement and added, "The protest leaders are now getting old, and some sick. They don't appeal to people under 30. And the next generation is not producing future leaders. Our time is limited and when we go, I'm afraid, there will be no one to take over."
She named the leaders she knew, the provocateurs that everyone knows, but one name stood out for me, Yonah Baumel.
"He's doing poorly these days," she noted.
His son was one of three soldiers captured by Syria in the July, 82, Battle Of Sultan Yaacob in central Lebanon. Around the year 2000, the Commander of the soldiers' axis, Gen. Avigdor Ben Gal and his Intelligence Officer Mickey Shatz gave a small but profoundly important piece of information about the incident in the newspaper Kol Ha'ir. It seems that when Ben Gal and Shatz left camp, Ehud Barak, today's Defence Minister, and Amram Mitzneh, former Labor Party head, got on the radio and ordered a religious army brigade to enter a Syrian ambush. Twenty three Israelis died in the Sultan Yacob mess.
Not said was that Labor officers like Barak and Mitzneh were sabotaging Menachem Begin's winning war. And this fact was ignored by Yonah Baumel when I told him what had to be done to save his son. He was a tall, healthy man when I met him. I told him to hunt down Ben Gal and Shatz, verify their facts, call a press conference, and expose then Prime Minister Barak as a murderer of Jews. Sadly, he didn't do what had to be done and I didn't find out why until Barak's most recent appointment as Defence Minister. Yonah, almost, bravely announced that Barak was unfit for the office because he was involved in his son's kidnapping.
I reported on the incident and a priest wrote me from England protesting my piece. I assured him that every fact about Barak was accurate. He replied that I was right about Barak but wrong to write the soldiers' had been killed. The priest was working with Yonah to have his son released, almost a quarter of a century after he was taken prisoner. I wrote back saying that I hoped I was wrong and he was alive.
Few men lived as painful a life as Yonah Baumel, and few men could have remained so faithful to his son, and to the political system that took him away. Yonah believes the Israeli government can retrieve his son. So he remains true to an old ideal. But the truth is it can't because its Defence Minister was the one who stole his son from him.
I'm sorry to hear you're not well, Yonah. We need you to fully recover. You have one more vital task to complete.

My new service is working.
Everyone loves it. Write me if you want in.

Consider yourself in. Welcome to my new service. Here's an outline of what you'll get:

         - Standard, mainline reports corrected to point out the shadow world we know about but they will not acknowledge. I'll add a few comments, no more, to complete the picture.
         - Unstandard, unmainline reports that I don't use because, believe it or not, I'm too cowardly. If you think my reports are daring, you have to see what is actually sent to me. And you will.
         - There is the issue of hatred. I never exhibit hatred, except to crime and deceit. But what I must reject are people and groups who viciously despise the likes of Jesuits, Jews, new agers, Christians of all shades, Arabs, bankers, masons, Zionists, Democrats, pro-lifers, Luciferians, Jewish leaders, the medical industry...you name it. I can't include the overly emotional because I must be objective, but buried in their agendas there can be some truth. Sometimes, they are even right on target. You'll get to know them all.
         - Then there are financial analysts who are usually right on target, so are buried alive by the mainstream.
         - More information is sent to me on subjects I can't repeat because of reader boredom. For instance, I get lots of new reports on Shabtai Tzvi, Rabbi Antelman, Rabin, Vatican etc. I'll send these to you along with readers' comments, eye-witness reports etc. with the writers' names removed.
         - I don't use deep political and economic conspiracies. I have enough trouble with my straightforward essays on provable conspiracies. I'll send you a steady stream of conspiratorial literature sent to me. I add, much of it comes from places outside my sphere of interest. Do with it as you like.
         - And, you'll get the material I finally winnow out for my own articles. Choose the points I should focus on. Add your own input. Help make my work more accessible to those who care about Israel's survival.

Here's how I'll get this done. I'll keep a separate list. I'll send one long e-mail every day or two so you won't be flooded with mail from me. I'll add the correspondence to this letter, no matter how long, and you can pick and choose.
And now, the difficult part for me; payment. I am the world's worst businessman. Some of the people requesting the service have savings, others are struggling more. All are sincere. I receive over 400 letters on a given day. Providing the service means putting a couple of hours into these letters, organizing them and getting them to you daily. I'll commit myself to six months of work in this experimental period.
          You decide what it's worth.

Rosh Yeshiva Arrested by Israel Police

Rabbi Yigal Shendorfi is one of the finest persons I have ever met. He has been MOSER NAFSHO to teach Torah and provide life guidance to hundreds, if not by now thousands, of Jewish youth. It is therefore not surprising that the unJewish, Torah haters of Israel have decided to persecute him. He is guilty not only of the crime of teaching Torah but of teaching love of the Land of Israel to his students. Furthermore he is guilty of the terrible crime of being a "settler" and asserting that the Land of Israel belongs by G-D given right to the people of Israel. The wonder is that unJews waited so long to persecute him.

The rosh yeshiva of Yeshivat Yeshu'at Mordechai, located in the Shomron community of Nachliel, Rabbi Yigal Shendorfi, was arrested on Tuesday night. According to YWN contacts in the community, the rabbi's arrest is seen as deterrence, sending a message that the authorities are now taking a harder stance, a lower-tolerance policy for residents of yishuvim in Yehuda and Shomron.

Police waited for the rav as he traveled home, picking him up at the Kiryat Sefer Checkpoint. It appears that he is being held for alleged illegal activity in connection with protests that took place in the summer at the Yad Yair Outpost, near Nachliel.

According to authorities, a number of security personnel and vehicles were injured and damaged as a result of the actions of youths at the outpost.

Rav Shendorfi is being arraigned on Wednesday with the state requesting he be held in incarceration. Attorney Naftali Wurtzburger is representing the rav.

Fwd: WHO AM I? A Great Riddle!

Thank you, A.M. Great!

DS

FORWARDED BY LINDA
Who Am I?

(If you guess the correct answer, you're 1 in 500, or a regular reader of my mailings!)

I was raised in one country but my father was born in another. I was not his only child. He fathered several children with a number of women.

I became very close to my mother because my father showed little interest in me. Then my mother died at an early age from cancer. Later in life, questions arose over my real name. My birth records were sketchy and no one was able to produce a reliable birth certificate.

I grow up practicing one faith, but converted to Christianity because this was widely accepted in my country. But I practiced non-traditional beliefs and did not follow the Holy Bible or mainstream Christianity.

I worked and lived among lower-class people as a young adult before I decided it was time to get serious about my life and I embarked on a new career.

I wrote a book about my struggles growing up. It was clear to those who read my memoirs that I had difficulties accepting that my father abandoned me as a child.

I became active in local politics when I was in my 30s and then burst onto the scene as a candidate for national office when I was in my 40s. I had a virtually non-existent resume, very little work history, and no experience in leading a single organization. Yet I was a powerful speaker who managed to draw incredibly large crowds during my public appearances.

(From here on the guessing gets easier.)

At first, my political campaign focused on my country's foreign policy. I was critical of my country in the last war. But what launched my rise to national prominence were my views on the country's economy. I had a plan on how we could do better. I knew which group was responsible for getting us into this mess.

Mine was a people's campaign. I was the surprise candidate because I emerged from outside the traditional path of politics and was able to gain widespread popular support. I offered the people the hope that together we could change our country and the world.

I spoke on behalf of the downtrodden including persecuted minorities, but my actual views were not widely known until after I became my nations leader. However, anyone could have easily learned what I really believed if they had simply read my writings and examined those people I associated with. But they did not.

Then I became the most powerful man in the world. And the world learned the truth.

(If you don't know yet, take a wild guess before peeking at the answer.)

Who am I?
Scroll down for the answer.

Last week, I wrote about how our oil-rich friends in the Middle East are buying gold hand over fist. It turns out they're not the only ones. The latest figures from the World Gold Council show a frenzy of activity in the most recent quarter.
And gold ended last week with a bullish move to the upside that set off "buy" alarm bells for technical traders around the world.
But you know what? I think the best is yet to come for gold. Because it's likely that the WORST is yet to come for the U.S. economy.
And these economic forces could send investors charging even faster into gold just as fundamental forces also align for a move much higher.
I'll get to some of those fundamentals in just a bit. First, let's look at what Washington's insane clown posse is doing to make gold look good.
I Remember When a Trillion
Dollars Was Real Money
1) The Fed Pledges $7.2 Trillion of YOUR Money. Bloomberg News reports that the U.S. government is prepared to lend more than $7.4 trillion — approximately half the value of everything produced in the nation last year — to rescue the financial system, which has been in cardiac arrest since the credit markets seized up.

There are still good places to park your money (and no, your backyard isn't one of them). That's why we want to send you a new FREE special report, called Where to Stash Your Cash.
This is the report your bankers pray you'll never see. In it, we teach you how to get the very best combination of safety, yield, liquidity and convenience on your cash reserves.
Click here for more information ...

How much is that? The pledged money is equal to $24,000 for every man, woman and child in the country. And $2.8 trillion of that has already been spent, according to Bloomberg.
Now brace yourself for the bad news ...
2) The Government Has Already Spent $4.3 Trillion Bailing Out Wall Street. According to CNBC, as of last week, the Federal government had already spent $4.3 trillion in bailouts, from $900 billion for the Term Auction Facility ... to $112 billion bailing out AIG ... to $540 billion backing up Money Market funds ... to $700 billion for the Treasury Asset Relief Program (TARP), and more.
$4.3 trillion — that's more than America spent on World War II, adjusted for inflation. And it's all going down a black hole created by Wall Street bankers.
The Federal government has already spent $4.3 TRILLION in bailouts and has hardly made a dent in the financial crisis.
All that money has to come from somewhere. Investors are stuffing their money into Treasuries with no yield, and the government still has to go out and borrow more. The U.S. Treasury is on course to borrow $1.5 trillion this year, and it's still not enough! Next year's budget deficit will easily top $1 trillion; more than double this year's deficit.
The overall impact of what the bailout will cost ultimately should be very negative for the U.S. dollar ... and that should be bullish for gold.
3) Wall Street Is Probably Going to Need $Trillions More! The financial crisis is really the death of a thousand cuts. Let's take the Citigroup fiasco as an example. You may have heard that Citigroup is getting a $20 billion equity injection on top of the $25 billion it got in October.
But Citi will also carve out $300 billion in troubled assets, which will remain on its balance sheet.
The first $37-$40 billion in losses on those assets will go to Citi.

( From Money and Markets);

"Obama's Administration: More of the Same? Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson has set the bar pretty low as he limbos past barriers of logic and fairness to bail out his fat-cat friends. So you might think that the new administration, and Obama's nomination for Treasury Secretary, New York Fed President Tim Geithner, would be a welcome change from the crony capitalism at work now.

The widely respected Big Picture blog has a post by institutional risk analyst Chris Whalen titled: "What Barack Obama Needs to Know About Tim Geithner, the AIG Fiasco and Citigroup." I highly recommend you read Whalen's post. He makes the following point:

By embracing Geithner, President-elect Barack Obama is endorsing the ill-advised scheme to support AIG directed by Hank Paulson et al at Goldman Sachs and executed by Tim Geithner and Ben Bernanke. News reports have already documented the ties between GS and AIG, and the backroom machinations by Paulson to get the deal done. This scheme to stay AIG's resolution cannot possibly work and when it does collapse, Barak Obama and his administration will wear the blame due through their endorsement of Tim Geithner.

Read the whole thing. If Whalen is right, the crisis of confidence already shaking the financial markets is nothing compared to the tsunami of trouble that will follow."

A few years back Tamar interviewed me on her show when our group disclosed the fact that there are identical mass detention facilities here in Eretz Israel set up by US-German companies and manned by US personnel and others.
Barry Chamish and others using the information and  with my blessings and warnings for their security went on and photographed the facilities, the photos are on several files and secured.

After that he was made target of several "accidents" I believe.

I also was invited to give a conference on the subject by the "Root & Branch" people in

Constitutional lawyer says electors have duty to investigate citizenship

Posted: November 24, 2008

By Bob Unruh

Barack Obama

A one-time vice presidential candidate who is considered an expert on the U.S Constitution says it is up the electors from the 50 states to make certain President-elect Barack Obama is a natural-born U.S. citizen before they cast votes for him in the Electoral College Dec. 15.

"If they do their duty, they would make sure that if they cast a vote for Mr. Obama, that Mr. Obama is a natural-born citizen," Herb Titus, the Constitution Party's running mate to Howard Phillips in 1996, told WND today.

"I think it should be resolved. The duty is in the Electoral College. Every Obama elector that is committed to casting a vote on the 15th of December, they have a constitutional duty to make certain whether Mr. Obama is a natural-born citizen," he said.

If the electors fail their duty and Obama proves ultimately to fail the eligibility requirement of the U.S. Constitution, there would be only the laborious, contentious and cumbersome process of impeachment available to those who would wish to follow the Constitution, he suggested.

The issue of Obama's citizenship has been in the news for weeks as multiple legal claims have asserted the Democrat is not a natural-born U.S. citizen. There have been claims he was born in Kenya, that he's a British subject because of his father and that he lost his citizenship in Indonesia.

Two of the cases are pending before the U.S. Supreme Court and several others that have fallen by the wayside.

Also, thousands of people are jumping aboard a petition that demands documentation of Obama's eligibility to hold the highest office in the U.S., not just assurances from party officials.

Already, more than 75,000 petitioners have joined the effort coordinated by WND founder and editor Joseph Farah.

To participate, sign the petition here.

A report accompanying Farah's petition explains the many questions raised about Obama's eligibility, from an apparently fabricated "Certification of Live Birth" posted online to questions about what nation's passport he used to travel to Pakistan.

One case is scheduled for a conference among U.S. Supreme Court justices Dec. 5. Conferences are private meetings of the justices at which they review cases and decide which ones to accept for formal review. The Supreme Court's website listed the date for the case brought by Leo C. Donofrio against Nina Wells, the secretary of state in New Jersey, over not only Obama's name on the 2008 election ballot but those of two others, Sen. John McCain and Roger Calero.

Do you agree with contentions made in "The Audacity of Deceit" about the impact of an Obama White House on the United States?

The case, unsuccessful at the state level, was submitted to Justice David Souter, who rejected it. The case then was resubmitted to Justice Clarence Thomas for conference Dec. 5.

Titus holds a law degree cum laude from Harvard, is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and a long list of federal court districts, and helped found a law school. He told WND the framers of the Constitution specifically wanted the electors, citizen voters from all the states, to determine the presidency to avoid chief executives who are indebted to political parties or court decisions.

In 1788, Titus noted, Alexander Hamilton wrote in the Federalist Papers on the issue of the presidential election that "nothing was more to be desired than that every practicable obstacle should be opposed to cabal, intrigue, and corruption."

"They have not made the appointment of the president to depend on any pre-existing bodies of men, who might be tampered with beforehand to prostitute their votes; but they have referred it in the first instance to an immediate act of the people of America, to be exerted in the choice of persons for the temporary and sole purpose of making the appointment," Hamilton wrote. "And they have excluded from eligibility to this trust, all those who from situation might be suspected of too great devotion to the president in office. No senator, representative, or other person holding a place of trust or profit under the United States, can be of the numbers of the electors.

"Talents for low intrigue, and the little arts of popularity, may alone suffice to elevate a man to the first honors in a single state; but it will require other talents, and a different kind of merit, to establish him in the esteem and confidence of the whole Union, or of so considerable a portion of it as would be necessary to make him a successful candidate for the distinguished office of President of the United States," Hamilton wrote in support of the concept of the Electoral College.

If the electors fail, Titus said, "I think it moots the point."

"I don't think there is anything in the Constitution [that would allow a challenge based on a candidate's constitutional qualifications.]

"It would politically undermine Obama's re-election … and there may be an impeachment if someone concluded he deliberately misled the people, and knew he was not a natural-born citizen," he said.

Titus said the evidence clearly shows there are questions about Obama's birth that should be resolved. But he said he doesn't believe the courts will do anything, nor should they.

"If it's revealed it's only going to be [revealed because of] investigative journalism or by Obama himself," he said.

"It's only the Electoral College that has the duty and authority to determine is a person is qualified to be president," Titus said.

"We should act accordingly, get the names of all the electors, including McCain's electors, and urge them to do their duty," he said.

He said, however, the bottom line is that there are some people who would rather ignore the Constitution than dispense with a candidate who may be unqualified.

"Politically, [being ineligible] would be a very serious problem for [Obama,]" he said. "But there also would be people who would only shrug."

"It's up to the people. Essentially the Constitution is a covenant of the people with their government. If the people don't insist on their government officials abiding by the covenant, I don't know what you can do," he said.

Titus said the basis of a natural-born requirement traces back to the Old Testament, where Moses prophesied about the people of Israel getting a king.

"The whole notion of a natural-born citizen is designed for the purpose of making sure that the chief executive would not have politically divided loyalties," he said.

Supreme Court would decide?

Meanwhile, a veteran law enforcement officer and director of criminal justice courses says he believes the 2008 election results ultimately could come down to a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which issued a ruling eight years ago that helped put George W. Bush in the White House.

The assessment comes from James H. Hafeman, a veteran of decades in law enforcement who supervised an armed security force, taught criminal justice and directed criminal justice programs in Michigan. He submitted a commentary to WND, outlining his evidence.

Hafeman said his argument is based mostly on the U.S. Constitution, which outlines the requirements for eligibility for president, including that the candidate be a "natural-born" citizen.

While replacing a president is outlined in the Constitution, he warned the replacement of a president-elect who is found to be ineligible isn't simple.

"While many have speculated that an official declaration of Obama's ineligibility may lead to the appointment of Joe Biden as president, the speculation is inaccurate. Since it was up to the respective political party to properly vet their candidate before a primary election, they may not qualify to be rewarded for their lack of integrity. Additionally there is no separate balloting for president and vice-president; they share the same slot. Obama's ineligibility would effectively void the entire Obama-Biden ticket," he said.

Therefore, he said, other provisions likely would come into play

"We already know that if two candidates have an equal number of Electoral College votes, the members of the House of Representatives will collectively choose the president. Many citizens have been led to believe that it is the responsibility of the House is to decide the winner by majority vote, but that is incorrect. Members of the House of Representatives from each state would meet in a state-caucus type of meeting and vote with all congressional members from their respective state. The majority of the state's delegation would only have only one vote. Out of the 50 votes allotted among the House of Representative members, 25 plus a minimum of one vote would be required to elect the president," he wrote.

William Ball, a political science professor at Northern Michigan University, has said, "The results of the Electoral College are sent to the president of the Senate, but if there is no winner, then the House of Representatives, not the whole Congress, decides who will be president. But, in this process the State of Vermont or Wyoming with their one vote each would have as much power as California or New York."

Hafeman said the Constitution demands the same process for a situation in which a seated president becomes ineligible, but Obama won't be inaugurated until Jan. 20.

"This may be the first known case where a presidential candidate intentionally attempted to side step the specific requirements of the Constitution in order to run for the office of president," Hafeman said. "The 12th Amendment is quite clear. If the president is found ineligible, the vice-president shall become the president. However, the key is the 'president,' not the president-elect. In other words, if Mr. Obama is found ineligible to hold the office prior to his January 20, 2009, inauguration, the 12th Amendment would not necessarily be the guiding instrument for the Supreme Court.

"The Justices would be free to make their own determination regarding the specifics of the general election," Hafeman wrote.

So, Hafeman concluded, the high court may have to make some decisions.

If the worse fears about Obama's birthplace prove true, Hafeman said, the court will have to decide the consequences for providing inaccurate assurances of eligibility.

"Second, what process will be used to designate someone who will assume the office?" he wrote.

"Since all the secretaries of state will be forced to nullify the Obama-Biden ticket, the Electoral College votes would go to the next highest contender. The principle would award McCain-Palin with the total possible Electoral College votes – all 538 electors," he suggested.

"In the national-interest scenario, the question that might be asked by the Democrats may focus on the question as to whether or not they could hold an emergency national convention in order for the party to re-nominate a president and/or another vice-president candidate. If the Supreme Court declares the entire election invalid, then that may be a possibility, but it is highly unlikely since every other presidential team on the ticket were legitimate," he wrote.

"The Supreme Court may decide a new election is in order and would have to waive the two-term limitations of George W. Bush so that he can remain in office until the conclusion of the election. The continuation of his term is a viable course of action, but it may not be an action favored by the Supreme Court. Instead, the justices may simply view the anomaly as a political race with an illegitimate and disqualified opponent, which would result in a win for the McCain-Palin ticket."

On WND's new forum page, the level of frustration was rising. Dozens contributed their thoughts immediately after the forum was posted:

"What makes Obama non-respon[sive] to the simplest of requests?" asked one reader "Does he think that it is politically incorrect to ask for authentication of the myriad of facts about himself … Is he testing the grounds to see how far he can play with this charade?"

Other comments included:

  • "Obama won his first election ever by getting three Democratic opponents thrown off the ballot? He's all for using the law to help himself win. Wouldn't it be ironic if he is not allowed to serve as president due to the law? … Turn around is fair play!
  • "Even the left-wing liberal news media is beginning to ask the question: 'Who is this man we have elected? We really do not know much about him.'"
  • "Obama's refusal to produce the ORIGINAL given birth certificate gives us all pause. His silence on these allegations is deafening. The anointed one believes that if he can hold us all back until he's in the Oval Office he's hit a home run and he's 'safe.' Ah, not so! Check your law, Obama, and you will see that even if were to make it to the White House you will no longer be able to hide behind those red velvet ropes."
  • "There must be something that would have caused him great harm prior to the election, and would have stopped him from becoming elected. What could that little piece of information be?"

Why now? Has Israel Electric been informed of something the public is being kept in the dark about?

Electric Co. Holds War Drill

Cheshvan 27, 5769, 25 November 08 05:53

ISRAELI FEARS: Behind the Strategy of Appointing Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State

Thank you, ET, for this most penetrating article.  DS

http://sultanknish.blogspot.com/2008/11/behind-strategy-of-appointing-hillary.html

Behind the Strategy of Appointing Hillary Clinton
as Secretary of State

The proposed appointment of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State has many political observers baffled, but it shouldn't. It's actually a quite clever move, which can be summed up in two words-- Plausible Deniability.

And a major target for which that will be needed is Israel.

Appointing Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State will create an interesting situation because as a major former rival, Hillary Clinton will be seen as distinct and even independent from Obama, freeing him from a good deal of the responsibility for her actions. With just about any other Secretary of State, their actions would reflect on Obama. But Hillary Clinton is such a major personality that it will be easy for the Obama Kleptocracy to disown her at its convenience.

Hillary Clinton wanted a whole other role in the Cabinet, but instead as Secretary of State she will have very little domestic power but a great deal of power overseas. This will close the door on her ability to threaten Obama's power base at home, while at the same time cutting off the head of the conservative Democratic Leadership Council, a major source of interparty opposition, and freeing up a Senate seat in New York for a major ally of his. A solid three pointer.

As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton will carry most of the weight and blame for what will happen in Iraq and Afghanistan, making her into a highly visible lighting rod for the Anti-War camp, which is already assailing Obama.

More importantly though, Hillary Clinton will be a gun pointed at Israel's head. There is one foreign policy accomplishment that the Clintons are known for and that is Oslo. Over the last decade and a half, while Russia has gone from democracy back to tyranny and radical Islam has run wild across the Muslim world, the State Department and successive Secretaries of State and President have had one foreign policy priority above all others, to force Israel to make enough concessions to Terrorism to birth a "viable" Palestinian state.

Hillary Clinton is an ideal choice for the job. First she has bafflingly high ratings from the Jewish community. This makes her perfect for sticking in the knife without anyone daring to complain. Second of all, she's associated with Oslo by way of her husband, and will naturally be able to drag in Rabin and the usual bundle of cliches.

Third once in office she will have no choice but to go after Israel. Secretary of State is a mostly thankless job. The only way she can succeed and distinguish herself with a major triumph that would give her a legacy and position her for a hypothetical 2016 Presidential run. And there is only one place she can go for that legacy, and that is by following her husband with another White House Rose Garden photo op between Abbas and Livni, putting into place a Palestinian State.

This cynical awareness is behind her appointment and her slow reluctant acceptance. Her job once in office will be to take a beating for the lack of change abroad and to browbeat and blackmail Israel into cutting a deal that will create an expanded terrorist state headed by a puppet government ripe for a Hamas takeover... with its capital in Jerusalem.
That is the ugly bottom line. It's also why the new motto of Pro-Israel activism should be "Obama Hands Off Israel." A cynical game in which Hillary Clinton is forced to play Bad Cop on Israel while Obama gets to play the Good Cop is an intolerable deception that must be torn down by holding Obama accountable for pressure placed on Israel to give in to terrorism.

With a likely National Security Advisor who wants NATO troops in Israel's West Bank protecting Fatah and Hamas terrorists, the game pieces are being moved into place. It will soon be the time for bold confrontational activism that challenges the Kenyan occupant of the White House directly by attacking what he values most, his popularity.

Some will recall the step-by-step building of Hitler's murder machine. First, Brown-Shirt thugs, then the Gestapo in Black (the Waffen SS). The regular German army was absorbed to conquer and act as guards in the extermination camps. All step-by-step.

Regrettably, we see this war against the Jewish people who are valiantly building their homes in our ancient homeland.  A civil war against them is building - by its own Jewish (un-Jewish?) leaders to control the people.

Hitler also absorbed the High Courts of Germany by his Nuremberg Laws, much the same as we see Israel's High Supreme Court first taken over by Aharon Barak (now retired) and then handed over to Dorit Beinish - also a committed Leftist who flanks her rule with other extreme Leftists. Taking over a nation, using the familiar techniques of Fascism has long left the planning stages and is now in full action.

The early 1980s saw the planning stage, followed by the Oslo Accord Surrenders, followed by the Gush Katif/Gaza abandonment and destruction. Now, the Left is effectively onto Phase-Out the settlers from Judea, Samaria, the Jordan Valley, the Golan Heights and those parts of Jerusalem which Jordan occupied and desecrated for 19 years from 1948 to 1967.

Why is a Jewish government aiding the still functional PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization) which was created in 1964 by Egypt, then handed over to Yassir Arafat.  Remember that 1964 was before the 1967 Six Days' War when  the territories were liberated back to their historic, geographic and Biblical names of Judea, Samaria and unified Jerusalem?

I wonder if the IDF (Israel Defense Force) from the highest officer to the strongest foot soldiers knew they were calling down a curse on themselves and their families for generations to come by attacking their own Jewish people? Or, as the Nazis claimed: "I was just following orders."?

Perhaps it would be an act of mercy to inform every Jewish soldier what will happen when they betray their fellow Jews and the Jewish nation of Israel.

These are the most ardent lovers of Israel, willing to fight in the most elite units of the IDF. The govt just refuses to understand that loyalty and love of the land cannot be separated from one's right to LIVE on our land. If there is no turn-around in the flawed reasoning of the govt, where arabs are protected more than Jews, why not re-vamp the entire IDF, do a complete reversal, and make it arab-only, Jews don't have to serve?                                    From Shoshanna Walker rosewalk@concentric.net

IDF to act to cut funding from institutions whose students engage in "illegal activity against IDF and Palestinians" by Dr. Aaron Lerner Date: 23 November 2008

Yediot Ahronot correspondent Yossi Yehoshua reports in today's edition that Deputy Minister of Defense Matan Vilnai (Labor) held a meeting last Thursday of the defense establishment at which it was decided to act to cut funding from educational institutions that have students who are "extreme right wing activists".

"Vilnai instructed the security elements to identify yeshivot, associations and schools that receive state funds within which there is incitement or whose students engage in criminal activity against the IDF and against Palestinians. The defense establishment will act to stop the flow of funds to those institutions, and in certain cases even check the legal possibility of issuing an administrative order closing down the institutions that aid in the violation of the law in the territories. This is to be carried out with the cooperation of Shabak, Yesha police, the Judea and Samaria Administrative Authority, Ministry of Education and legal elements in the Ministry of Defense and Central Command."

There is currently a building freeze imposed upon all of the approximately 400 thousand Jews in Judea and Samaria. The Roadmap, imposed by the United States Government and others on Israel, states clearly that the Government of Israel must freeze "all settlement activity including natural growth of settlements" (see last paragraph in Phase I, here: http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2003/20062.htm. )

                                                                        SETTLEMENTS:

*GOI (Government of Israel) [Goy?] immediately dismantles settlement outposts erected since March 2001

*Consistent with the Mitchell Report, GOI freezes all settlement activity (including natural growth of settlements)

http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2003/20062.htmThis means no new homes -- no new classrooms -- no new kindergartens -- no buying houses (such as the famous Bet haShalom in Hebron) for a huge Jewish community having the largest natural increase rate in the entire Western world. Currently, just-married couples in Yesha simply have nowhere to live! (unless they live in a so-called "illegal outpost").

This is, simply put, cruelty to and persecution of Jews with no justification whatever. In history, many natural functions of life were withheld from the Jews: the right to have children (Egypt, in Biblical times), the right to live in Europe (Spanish and other exiles, c. 1492), the right to emigrate (Europe post-holocaust, Russia behind the Iron Curtain), and so forth. Now, the right to build a home is being withheld -- aided and abetted by the United States of America, of all unlikely countries!!

WHAT CAN WE DO? The OU -- the umbrella group of Orthodox Jewry in the United States -- is holding its bi-annual convention this week on 26-30 November at the Ramada Hotel, Jerusalem, http://www.ou.org/convention/index

Plus an International Conference on Contemporary Issues & Halacha November 30 to December 2 at the Yeshurun Synagogue, Jerusalem

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-eboT9yPVSo&eurl=http://www.hebron.com/english/.

Please write an email to the OU asking them to give the plight of the Yesha Jews a prominent place both on their agenda, in their press releases, and in the operative resolutions which govern the Organization's activities (or lack of them) for the next 2 years!!!

The world isn't flat, it's flattened
By Spengler

It wasn't the world that got flat, contrary to New York Times pundit Thomas Friedman, but the emerging markets that got flattened.

Faddish conventional wisdom over the past few years held that American influence was fading as technology radiated to the far reaches of the world. When America's economy went into a ditch, though, the supposed economic superpowers of the future went flying, like children on skates holding onto the back of truck.

The American consumer, it turns out, played Atlas to the global economy, taking the exports of Asia, so that Asia could buy the commodities of Russia, Latin America and Africa. Remove the

American consumer, and Asian exports crash, taking commodity prices along with them.

The financial crash exposes the fragility of large swaths of the world. The political consequences will be terrible. The worst of it is that America will not be around to moderate the melee, not if Democratic Senator Barack Obama is elected president, that is. Those who objected to America's role as world policeman will get what they wanted, but they won't like it: a religious war reaching from Lebanon to Pakistan, and Colombian-style narco-war spreading to Mexico and Brazil.

The wave of American self-pity that may carry Obama to the White House stems, in turn, from a global crisis that has sunk a good deal of the developing world. Worst affected are the most populous Muslim countries, and Russia's "near abroad". Pakistan, Ukraine and Belarus are out of funds and have applied for help to the International Monetary Fund. Indonesia and Turkey face drastically increased borrowing and import costs. Iran's economy will implode with oil in the mid-US$60s.

The table below shows the cost of default protection, a gauge of hard-currency borrowing costs, for some emerging markets. The numbers are somewhat arbitrary, reflecting a freeze on credit to emerging markets.

Annual cost of five-year default protection in basis points above the London interbank offered rate (LIBOR):

Country Basis Points Above
LIBOR
Argentina 3900
Ukraine 2750
Pakistan 2600
Venezuela 2260
Kazakhstan 1200
Indonesia 1200
Russia 1200
Turkey 900
Philippines 720
Egypt 720

That is, with LIBOR at 3.5%, the Russian government will pay roughly 15% for dollar funding, while Ukraine and Pakistan will pay about 30%, and Turkey about 11%. That does not accurately gauge the damage to their economies, though, for many of these countries depended on huge borrowings from short-term credit markets that now are frozen.

The economic crisis buoyed Obama out of his post-convention slump and exposed the emptiness of the Republicans. But it also has crushed the aspirations of the most populous Muslim countries. Even before the financial crisis, Pakistan and Turkey had turned towards political Islam. Pakistan's intelligence service is providing support to the Taliban in Afghanistan, jeopardizing the Western position. The financial crisis will push Pakistan further towards radical Islam. Now this proclamation will be preached from every mosque from Tyre to Lahore: "The corrupt West tried to seduce you with consumerism. Now the poisoned gifts of the West are shown to be an illusion, and those of you who lusted after them are left only with your humiliation."

Just what has the rest of the world done to challenge the economic hegemony of the United States? The commodities boom has evaporated in a matter of months, with most raw materials trading at half of their May 2008 peaks. Like the housing bubble in the United States, the commodities bubble turns out to have been a way for the capital of the West to invent profits where there were none to begin with. With the commodities bubble came a fad for investment in emerging market currencies, drawing hundreds of billions of dollars into high-yielding currencies like the Brazilian real, the Turkish lira and the South African rand. The most popular emerging market currencies have fallen by 30% to 50% from their peaks.

The stock exchanges of the BRIC (Brazil-Russia-India-China) combination have fallen half again as far as the US stock market this year in dollar terms:

Country Stock Market Change
2008 to Oct. 22
Brazil -59%
Russia -72%
India -62%
China -62%
US -40%

No one in Asia, it appears, knows how to make money when American import demand shrinks, and when Asian growth falls, raw materials prices collapse. No one in Latin America, for that matter, seems to know how to make money when raw materials prices collapse. For all the preening and posing of the emerging world's nouveau riche, it turns out that the American consumer was the center of the world economy, and without the American consumer, all that is left are busted stock markets and bad credit.
Most embarrassing for the flat-worlders is the observation that the emerging markets crashed when the world concluded that Washington would not be able to reverse the financial crisis. The economic bomb that detonated in America caused more collateral damage in the emerging markets than casualties at home.

Until July 2008, commodity prices rose as stock prices deteriorated because investors falsely assumed that Washington would set off a new wave of inflation as it rescued the banking system. The commodity producers thumbed their collective nose at economic distress in the industrial world and expected the boom to go on forever. Once the markets concluded that Washington would not be able to prevent a financial collapse, the commodity indices crashed along with stock prices. The commodity producers went from boom to bust almost overnight.

Iran's theocrats, as I reported in June (Worst of times for Iran, Asia Times Online, June 24, 2008), managed to steal $35 billion from oil revenues. Luxury real estate prices rose to Parisian levels while poor Iranians lacked necessities. With the collapse of the oil price, subsidies for essential items will disappear and the regime will face economic collapse. Before it does so, I believe Iran will undertake an adventure to assert its hegemony in the region, probably at the expense of Iraq.

The low level of violence in Iraq during the past several months owes something to the skill of American arms in the so-called "surge", but it owes even more to a tacit agreement between Iran and the George W Bush administration: in return for leashing its irregular forces in Iraq, Iran would get a free hand with Hezbollah in Lebanon, and American forbearance with respect to its nuclear weapons program.

The Bush administration's motive to bribe Iran and avoid political damage in Iraq disappears on US presidential election day on November 4. Whether the US administration (or for that matter Israel) has the nerve to launch an air strike on Iran's nuclear facilities is anyone's guess (and everyone is guessing that the answer is negative). Nonetheless, Iran has created the strongest Shi'ite presence since the original battles that determined the succession to the Prophet Mohammed. It can watch the Shi'ite cause fade away with the price of oil, or it can attempt to use its capabilities before they are lost for another thousand years. Nothing at all that we know of the Iranians indicates that they would go quietly into another long night of Sunni oppression.

Iran's leaders, in short, find themselves in a position similar to, but more urgent than, the one that Adolf Hitler described to his senior commanders three weeks after the German invasion of Poland. I have quoted this before, but it deserves to be tattooed onto the foreheads of analysts who think that economic weakness reduces the likelihood of armed conflict.
We have nothing to lose, but much indeed to gain. As a result of the constraints forced upon us, our economic position is such that we cannot hold out for more than a few years. [Hermann] Goering can confirm this. We have no other choice, we must act ... At no point in the future will Germany have a man with more authority than I. But I could be replaced at any moment by some idiot or criminal ... The morale of the German people is excellent. It can only worsen from here.
Iran's ultimate target will be Saudi Arabia, whose largest oil fields are found inconveniently in Shi'ite-majority areas just across the Persian Gulf from Iran. The Saudis will not sit quietly while Iran gains the upper hand in Iraq. Pakistan and Turkey, Sunni powers with large armies, will be loath to allow Iran to dominate the region, and they also will be all the more dependent on Saudi generosity.

A whole generation of Western analysts looked approving on Turkey's turn to Islamism, as I reported last summer (Turkey in the throes of Islamic revolution, Asia Times Online, July 22). Now Turkey will be Islamist - and broke. Turkey paid more than 20% for local currency deposits in order to attract the funds to finance a current account deficit amounting to 7% of gross domestic product. The Islamist government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan now faces the worst of all possible worlds. The Turkish lira has lost a third of its value in the past month, and almost all of the devaluation will turn up in higher domestic prices. Credit availability for Turkish businesses will vanish, and Turkey will enter a profound economic crisis.

A belt of ungovernability now stretches from Lebanon to Pakistan, with incalculable political and military consequences. I believe that a Shi'ite-Sunni version of Europe's 17th-century Thirty Years' War will engulf the region.

Latin America presents a different malady: it has the middle class that wasn't. The raw materials boom turned into a windfall for Brazil and Argentina, and the windfall financed spectacular rates of internal credit growth (31% and 38% respectively during the past year). For the first time, Brazil's auto manufacturers produced for internal demand rather than exports, and Sao Paolo choked in traffic while the helicopters of ethanol billionaires buzzed overhead. Argentina is now effectively broke, and the government of Cristina Kirchner has expropriated the country's private pension plans to obtain cash. Its foreign credit has collapsed completely.

Brazil's central bank still has formidable reserves, but the fragile political compromise that has kept a nominally leftist government in power cannot hold under present circumstances. Brazil's enormous underclass is ruled by drug gangs that are better armed than the police. A Brazilian congressional committee was told in February 2006 that corrupt elements in the Argentine army were selling heavy weapons to the Brazilian drug mobs, including anti-tank missiles.

Mexico in some ways is the most worrying place in the Western hemisphere. A low-level civil war between the drug cartels and the federal government has been fought over the past two years, and the cartels are winning. Senior Mexican officials charged with suppression of the cartels have been moving their families quietly out of the country. The collapse of the oil price and the likely collapse of remittances from Mexicans in the United States threaten the stability of the financial system, and the Mexican peso has lost nearly 40% of its value during the past several weeks. With the collapse of the American construction industry, a major source of employment for illegal Mexican immigrants to the US, the economic safety valve has broken, and the cartels have in inexhaustible supply of young men willing to risk their lives for a living.

Apart from Western and Central Asia and Latin America, the part of the world most affected by the economic crisis will be the Russian periphery. Ukraine has already joined Pakistan and Iceland at the mendicants' queue before the International Monetary Fund, and a number of other countries may not be far behind. Euphoria over the prospects of Eastern European economies permitted them to borrow massively on the now-frozen interbank market and eat up the proceeds in imports. Eastern Europe has the highest current account deficits in the world, and the greatest dependency on short-term foreign borrowings. "The risks of a hard landing are highest in Eastern Europe," warns the International Monetary Fund in its just-released Global Financial stability report.

Although Russia has taken on water in the crisis, its position relative to its former satellites has actually strengthened, as the table below makes clear:

Eastern Europe countries, current account deficit and net dependency on foreign bank borrowings

Country Current Account
(% of GDP)
Net Borrowing From Foreign Banks

There are no winners, but losing the least is the next best thing to winning. If America turns inward, even an economically damaged Russia will loom larger in the world.
